Gladstone has written a letter to Count Karolyi, the Austrian Ambassador in London, expressing deep regret for his (Mr. Gladstone's) censure on the foreign polipy of Austria, which, he says, was uttered in default of the assurance nqvv received that Austria has no desire to i extend her rule to the Balkans. Consols remain unchanged at 99|. New Zealand securities are at last quotations, viz.—s percent. 10-40 scrip, 103£ ; 5 per cent, loan (1880), 107 ; and 4-£ per cent, loan (1879-1904), 99£.
New Zealand wheat is quoted at 42s c.f.i.

May 12, Parliament lias been opened by the Governor, whose speech on the occasion says that the defences of the Colony are being proceeded with. The International Exhibitipi). is to be opened in October. The estimated co?t is L 320,000, and the receipts are expected to be L 70,000. A Board has been appointed to report upon the
question of water supply. A further extension of railways in the Colony will be undertaken. A new Judicature Bill is now under consideration. The depressed state of trade is passing away, the harvest prospects being favorable to a return of prosperity to the Colony. It indicated that new measures were to be brought forward for the consideration of Parliament, which will include Bills for the occupation of unalienated lands, for economical railway management, for Civil Service, for water conservation, for mining on private property, for suppression of the rabbit nuisance, and making better provision for the public health, and that the census of the Colony will shortly be taken.
