Engagements falling due oa the 4th of the month have been met with a pleasing promptitude. Although business at the moment is exceedingly quiet, and there is an absence of aty active inquiry, it is an encouraging-fact that matters financially are so satisfactory. In glancing over the operations of the month just gone by, it is noteworthy that the aggregate of sales has been fully up to, if not better than the average. For the first few days of the present month a lull is observable, and sales of merchandise to any extent have sustained a check, and a much quieter tone has pervaded in the import market. Signs, however, are not wanting that a more lively feeling is beginning to show, and that operations generally will very shortly be characterised by a brisker tone.—Press.

In our local in last night's issue concerning the meeting of Liberals at the Empire Hotel on Thursday evening, through a printer's blunder, it was represented that Mr. Atkinson had seconded the motion in favor of Mr, Koberts as well as that in favor of Mr. Jones. We should have stated that Mr. J. M'Coombe seconded the motion that Mr. Roberts should be chosen as a candidate. The Southland News says that it learns on unquestionable authority that the Railway Commissioners intend to recommend the immediate removal of the workshops from Invercargill to Dunedin. The Rev. John Foster is advertised to preach in connection with the Congregational Church recently formed in Oamaru, at the Old and New Tees-street Halls to-morrow. Mr. Foster, who has been elected minister of the Church, has intimated to his friends that so far as his pulpit work is concerned, it is his intention to engage chiefly in consecutive teaching. He will endeavor in all his ministrations to combine & morally healthy—a doctrinally sound—and a mentally intelligent instructi6n. Mr. Foster will commence to-morrow a series of morning sermons on "some fundamental doctrines of our common faith," and an evening series of lectures on "the life of some Old Testament hero." "We hear that those lectures will be brief, pointed, and practical, and the preacher craves the attendance of young men and others, especially those who have not as yet associated themselves with any Christian congregation.
