- L . <gt - ' An adjourned nqeeting of the Municipal Council was held last evening. Present— His Worship the Mayor, Councillors (Jar? land, Headland, Mainland, Tawnsend, Smith, and Roberts. The officer in charge of the Telegraph Department wrote re stays of telegraph posts obstructing the footpaths, offering to make alterations subject to the approval of the Inspector of Telegraphs. It wag resolved that the Engineer be given ; instructions to attend tcfthe matter. ~ " The . following memoranda from the Engineer were read With reference to your resolution passed at last meeting, that I should get a price from the contractors for the proposed alteration on part of the 18-inch supply pipe, J have to say that, having gonsultgij the pontraptocs, Ifindthe post ofproposed alteration to Be" as under, namely, on Barraclough and Walsh's contract, L7O; on A. and T. Burt's, nil. In further explanation, I beg to submit the enclosed statement' for yoiir con* sideration, as also Barraclough and Walsh's tender,. Memorandum re the deficiency in 18-inch pipes. (а) Had the full quantity of this size of. pipes required to lay from the reservoir to Eden-street come to hand, an additional weight of 81 tonsj at a cost of L@d4jwou}4 have been'entailed. " ' ' (б) By appropriating a portion of the 115-inch and 12-inch pipes to make up thp defigienpy, Qpd reduging the retieulatiqn pipes proportionately, no logs of head will be. occasioned, and an additional stretoh of double the length , of 8-inch pipes may be laid at a much less cost, and thus increase J the spread of the reticulation with perfect' efficiency. ■ j. We agree to cart and lay 275 lineal yards' additional supplementary 12-inch pipes required near reservoir for the sum of L7O, according to your instructions and to your satisfaction. " It was resolved, on the motion of Mr. Headland, seconded by Mr. Humphrey, ic That the proposed substitution of 12inch and 15-inch pipes for the 18-inch pipes short sent for the main supply of water from the reservoir be sanctioned by the. Council," The report of the Waterworks Committee in reference to Mr. Gilchrist's claims for compensation was adopted. Some inquiries having been made as to Mr. Tweeddell'a account for inspecting the pipes in England, the Engineer was instructed to make up his account for next ordinary meeting. The Engineer was instructed to call for tenders for fencing certain portions of the race.
