At the wool sales to-day 1700 bales ■were offered, making a total of 93,200 catalogued since the opening. The tone of the sale was quieter, but steady. The homeward mails via Brindisi were delivered to-day. Parliament has re-assembled after the Ministerial crisis, and members have been sworn in. The Bight Hon. H. B. Brand has been elected Speaker of the House of Commons. April 30. Lord Carlingford has declined the ambassadorship at Constantinople. The wheat market is firmer. The price of oats is easier. May 1. It is stated that Sir Andrew Clark will be appointed temporary AgentGeneral for Victoria in London. Sydney, May 1. Hennessy's brandy, case, 35s to 35s 6d; kerosene, Devoe's, Is 9id; New Zealand wheat, 4s; New Zealand oats, 2s to 2s 3d ; maize, 2s to 2s 9d ; Sugar Company's No. 1 pieces, L3B. Vane, an ex-bushranger, has been committed for trial on a charge of sheep stealing. The Hon. Sir John Robinson, VicePresident of the Executive Council, and representative of the Government in the Legislative Council, will temporarily take the portfolio of the Minister of Education, which is instituted under the new Education Act. Brisbane, May 1. It is reported that 600 Chinese are preparing to proceed to the Coin Goldfields, which have for some time been abandoned owing to the blacks and the difficulty of transport.
