MUNICIPAL COUNCIL.
The adjourned meeting of tho Municipal Council was held last evening, when there were present—His Worship tho Mayor, Councillors Garland, Headland, Humphrey, Mainland, Otterson, Roberts, Smith, and Townsend. Mr. M'Leod (Engineer) was in attendance, The Qlerlf having read the Engineer's report as published in our last issqo, the Engineer proceeded to give an explanation of the circumstanoea attending the mistake in the measurement of pipes for the waterworks. He could not Bay how the error had occurred, but it was unfortunately a fact that more 15in. pipes had been obtained than was required, and 18in. pipes thsn fta4 feepw arranged far, He was' T prepared to accept the blame, and, if the Council was dissatisfied, he would tender his resignation, to take effect that day three months. None of the pipes in the ground would have to be raised. He added that if the millß in town were to run night and day they would, of course, consume an immense quantity of water. In Dunedin the cost of an engine four to five horsepower WM ftbflut 1$ per wepk. After some little disousaion it was resolved to hold a special meeting on Wednesday next to consider the matter. The Mayor stated that the laying of pipes had been stopped by Mr, Rogers. It was understood that Mr. Qopnpl} had arranged wjth Mr. Rogprg to accept L7Q as compensation, but Mr, Rogers had afterwards refused to allow the pipes to be laid unless he received a further sum of LIS. His Worship was requested to confer with Mr. Rogers with a view to the matter being amicably settled. The following interim report of the Waterworks Committee was read : Be Mr. Aitchison's letter calling the at< tention of the Council to thegtatp of fppPH at the Georgetown "Cemetery, your oommittee have requested the Engineer to place a swing hurdle across the race at the east end of the cemetery. £e same gentleman's land, asking for information as to what woujd be required by the Council under the punting through his land, the Engineer informs your Com* mittee that halt a chain would pe wanted;
and u regards the fencing, this work will be done a* aoon as possible. y o ar Committee hare instracted the Engineer to fence the apper part only of the race through Ross' land, and remove the balance of material to Strachan's paddock adjoining. Be Mr. Roberts' application for wheelbarrows, your Engineer values them at 10s each, and can spare about twelve. They can be seen at the camp, Papakaio. As regards Mr. Gilchrist's application for crossings and pipes, your Committee instracted the Clerk to write that gentleman, stating that the Engineer * OU Jd meet him any day next week that would suit him. "With reference to the pipes, your Committee would still recommend that no pipes shonld be given. Be Mr. Clark's letter, your Committee find that on April 6th the balance, as shown by the statement proposed by the Engineer, shows L2 3s 2d to his credit. With reference to his claim for delay for want of materials, your Committee will Inspect the terms of his contract and report. The charge made that bis work has not been measured for some months vour Engineer states is not correct, as Inspector West has most carefully measured op all work done by this contractor to tne 14 th inst., as per voucher passed for L 27 18s 4d, and cheques for this and the balance, L2 3s 2d, have been signed, and are awaiting payment. With regard to the supply of bolts for nails, your Engineer has since sent what 13 required. The Engineer's report of 29th April.— Your Committee instructed the Engineer to take steps to have what sodding will be required through Ross' land done by Collins and Brown. With regard to the letter from Mr. Brydone, your Committee made enquiries at the office of your Solicitor and of Mr. Connell, but could not find any memorandum of the award of Mr. Calcutt, re land from reservoir to town boundary, bat from information collected your Committee find that an award of something like L2OO was made by Mr. Calcutt for a of entry to lay pipes. The award was taken np by the New Zealand Land Company before the Corporation had obtained a copy. Your Town Clerk has written to Mr. Brydone on the matter, asking for a copy of the award. Some discussion took place with reference to accounts long outstanding, after which the Council went into Committee. ,
