THE WATERWORKS.
At a meeting of the Munioipal Council heW last evening, the following report from the Engineer was read ; X have the honor to report that all the works under contract are progressing favorably, and aa far as can be seen wiu fee finished under contract time* Collins
and Brown have finished the race catting through Boss's paddock, and are now engaged hi sodding work. The fencing through Boss's ground will be commenced next week. Flaherty has commenced work at the Home Gaily—cleaning out slip. He will shortly begin at Hall's, and work steadily downwards from there, j The upper part of the race is in thoroughly good order. M'Callum and Co. have delivered the whole of the timber lately contracted for, and it has beeu put on the ground at the different points required in a satisfactory manner. They are now delivering the balance required to finish the works. The contractors for the timber works are getting on very well. The contractors for the pipe laying are also progressing in a satisfactory manner. A progress tracing is sent herewith showing the amount of work done to date. I regret to B£iy that through some inadvertence the number of 18-inch pipes ordered falls short by 125 pipes of the quantity actually required. This, however, cahbe remedied by laying a 15-inch and ao2-inch side by side part of the way, aricj utilizing the smaller sizes, 10-fnch and 9-inch, more in the main part of the town in the mean-' time. '
At the reservoir, Mr. Wallace^contract will be finished next week. The tower will be finished in less than a month, and the pitching is now being put upon the bottom and slopes. The pipe-tester has been broken, and I have sent it to Dunedin to bo repaired. The cost of repairing it will not be chargeable on the CorporationConsiderable discussion took place with reference to that part of the report mentioning the deficiency in the number of IS-inch pipes. During this it was pointed out that the error in the number of pipes amounted to a mistake in the Engineer's calculation of the length of pipes required of no less than 1250 feet. Several Councillors spoke strongly upon the matter, stating that the error was of & piece with similar errors of measurement that had been continually cropping up with regard to the waterworks. Consideration of the report wa3 adjourned until thi3 evening.
