CHESS.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE OAMARU MAIL. Sib,—ln reply to "Old Chessboard's" letter in your issue of yesterday, I would suggest that those players who are willing to join in forming a new club, or resuscitating the old one, should give in their names to Mr. Richmond, at the Athensgum. Oamaru ia the only town of any importance in the Colony which has not its flourishing chess club, I think if a club be formed it would be well to make the subscription a nominal sum, to bring it within the means of everyone, and for the first year those members possessing boards and men should lend them to the club until it was in a position to buy its own. Members could meet and practice at the Athenaeum, an 4 one night in each week should be set apart as the club night.—l am, &c., . Pawit.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE OAMRU MAIL.

Sir,—There appeared a letter in your issue of the 23rd mst. signed " Old Chessboard." While agreeing with him as to the qualities of the Royal game, and deprecating the apathy shown by most of the members of the late club. I think another another attempt should be made to set the club going. If such places as Waimate, Timaru, and I think, Temuka, can support a chess club, surely Oamaru can do so. Of. my own knowledge, Oamaru could raise a team of, say six or eight players, who could cope successfully with any of the above clubs.—l am, &c., Checkmate.
