It is stated that the police made a raid on the hotels yesterday and have laid informations against five for Sunday traffic.
At the Supreme Court to-day, the case the Bank of New South Wales v. Richardson, was heard. The action was brought to recover the sum of L 2429, amount alleged to be due to the bank for an overdraft. The defence was that the bank agreed to allow defendant an overdraft to the extent of L3GOQ for si? months, and which agreement had been broken. The jury gave a verdict for L 2094 and L 4 interest. : A counter action by Richardson against the bank claiming damages* for alleged breach of agreement, was afterwards, and resulted in a verdict for la damages. The May, three-masted sphooner, arrived from Singapore last evening, after a passage of 78 days. She brings a valuable cargo of Eastern produce. At the special meeting of the City Council, it was resolved, in consequence of the fire brigade disbanding to-night, that the labprers in the employ of the Corporation, be formed into a fire brigade pro tem. : The city engineer- has taken charge of: all the plant. April 20. A sharp shock of earthquake was felt here at 12.42 this afternoon. The direction was north to south. At the Supreme Court this morning the case of Lockie and others v. M'Donald and others, the original directors- of ilie Wellington Tramway Company, was commenced. The action' is to set aside the sale of the undertaking of the company on the ground that the provisional directors of the company had become personally interested in the undertaking with the originar promoters. The case will most likely occupy two or three days. CHRISTCHTJRCH. April 19. On Saturday 15,895 bags of grain were carried on the Christchurch section of railways, making the weekly total 81,619., The number of bags accumulated on Saturday night was 20,092, The Civil Service Commission examined to-day Messrs. Reston (Gaoler at Addington), Marsliman (Commissioner of Waste Lands), and A. Smith (Locomotive Engineer). On Saturday the members, visited the Farnley Brickworks and to-day the Addington workshops. ;■ . • : J)uring the past fortnight four cases of diphtheria, ten of typhoid, arid one of scarlet fever were reported to the local Board of: Health. Dr. Nedwill, in his ■report to the Board; combats the opinion expressed' by the Hospital authorities, as mentioned in a telegram last week, that typhoid fevar is no.t infectious.:. He winds up" thus : p typhoid is not infectious, then such men as Sir Wm. : Jenner, Mr. John Gunon, and Professor Parkes are wrong, and sanitary boards have been -spending the ratepayers' money and harassing the public unnecessarily. The members of the local committees in connection with tjie Sydney Exhibition held a preliminary meeting yesterday in view of acting in a similar capacity regarding the Melbourne Exhibition, but owing to the absence of a reply from Wellington to a telegram sept, tl}ey were unable to transact any business. The Drainage Board have agreed to allow the Cicy Council L 3 per chain for repairing streets where badly broken up by the sewers, and LI per chain other places.
AUCKLAND. April 19. At the : Supreme Court to-day, J. C. Young was charged with embezzling fifty pounds the property of the Government. Mr. Brookfield prosecuted and Messrs. :Hesketh and Tyler defended. The Hon., Mr. Oliver in reply to a deputation relative to the branch railway saifd he should reoommend it to the Commission. A strong sulphurous smell prevails for a considerable distance off. Steam was observed coming from a fissure in the rock. The fissure from which the steam comes is 18 inches long by 12 inches deep. BALCLTJ THA. April 19. ■' A fire occurred at Mr. -Wood's farm, Waitepeka, on Saturday afternoon, when a thousand bushels of threshed oats, ode stack containing 200 bushels, and a barn, were consumed. They were : insured; The origin of. the fire is unknown, but there is no suspicion. Tenders were recently called for the formation of a section of the Cafclin's River railway, but it appears that no tender has been accepted, the Government having decided not to proceed farther with the line. ~
