PERTOBE is a beautiful dapple brown Stallion,, standing 16 hands high, Bred by H. Phillips, Esq., Victoria, in 1869. Got by Panic (imported); his dam, Hester Grazebrook, by The Premier (imported), out of Miss Napier, by Delaprd (imported) ; Miss Napier's dam, Mrs. Roberts, by Wanderer (imported). See Victorian Stud Book, Tel. //., j>. 47. Panio was imported from England to Tasmania, and put to the stud at 3yrs. old. He was trained and raced at 4, and again put to. the stud. When he was 6 yrs. old, ho was purchased at a high price and imported to Victoria, where he had two more seasons' training and racing. He proved himself the beßt English horse ever trained in Australia. He ran remarkably well, and wbn several races, carrying heavy weights ; he was both speedy and staying, of: a most docile and quiet temper, with a wonderful constitution, and legs like iron. Like his sire, that firstclass English racehorse Alarm, "he was never sick, sorry, or lame," and retired from the turf without a blemish. At the stud, although from being in an out-of-the-way place, he has not been favored by many first-class mares, he has got more winners out of half-bred ones than any horse in Victoria, and for general purposes his stock ia much esteemed. >

In the breeding of PERTOBE there is a combination of some excellent strains of blood, such as the Waxy-Whalebone, in that famous line through Defence, and which comes to him on the sides of both sire and dam. On his sire Panic's side there is, as well as his good Defence blood, that of the game and stout Venison, the powerful and speedy Melbourne, and, most excellent of all, that of Pantaloon. " The value of the Pantaloon blood is undeniable, having furnished so many proofs, not alona as to its being speedy and staying, but alaa to its ' training on,' and being essentially a ' running strain ;' for although some others occasionally produce one or two first-class animals, few, if any, can compete with Pantaloon as to numbers. A very grand recommendation of this strain of blood is, that it mixes successfully with, and improves, all others." Thus writes Copperthwaite, and other good turf authorities agree with him to the same effect. On the side of tiie dam of Pbrtobb there is a lot of good blood coming in through The Pro* inier, whose grandsire, Tomboy, was by Jerry, out of the Ardrossan mare (iho dam of the mare Beeswing, celebrated not only as a first -class raoor, but also as the maternal ancestress of England's very best family of racehorses at the present time, viz., the Newminsterß). The DelaprtJ blood is also very good indeed. DelaprtS's dam, Fortress, by Defence, was, the dam of the Derby winner, Pyrrhus the First. Mrs, Roberts, the great grand-dam of PERTOBSj, was by Wanderer, and Wanderer's blood ia good, he being by Wanderer, by Gohanna, by Mercury, by Eclipse. In Tasmania, bo much is the Wanderer blood thought of, that they say " a bad one by Wanderer wan never known," and if they can trace a pedigree to a Wanderer mare, they consider that quite sufficient. "Augur," in the Australasian, Juno 15th 1878, says :—" I could fill the Australasian with the doings of " Panic," and his descendants. As a sire of good, sound, and useful stock he has never had an equal in the Southern hemisphere. His victory ia the Launceston Champion Race, and the style in' which he carried 10st. into second place in the Melbourne Cup, were performances of merit, and sufficient to satisfy the most exacting that he was a racehorse of nq mean order. The soundness of hi 3 stook become a proverb on the Australian Twrf, and the ancient Strop who won a r&ce Launceston in February, is a living example., Few horses have gone through such an ordeal as Melbourne, another sou at present performing at Queensland, The greatest of all steeplechasers is undoubtedly Lone Hand, and he is also a son of Panic. Postboy, Postman, Prodigious, and many other good cross country horses, too numerous to men* tion, are also descendants of the son of Alarm." Terms: L 5 ss, payable Ist of January, 1880.
