MUNICIPAL COUNCIL.

The usual fortnightly meeting of the Municipal Council was held at the'Oouncil Chambers last evening, the following Councillors being present:—His Worship the Mayor (presiding), Messrs. Headland, Humphrey, Mainland, Otterson, Roberts, Smith, Tomisend, and Dr. Garland, The Minutes of previous Meeting were read and confirmed. A letter from Mr. George Amos re nuisance was referred to the Public Work 9 Committee, with power to act. It was resolved that Mr. Barnes letter and tender be reoeived. Permission was given to Mr. J. Markham to remove the building on section 16, block 4. A claim was made by Messrs, Nowtoi} and Mirams, on behalf of Mr, T. Wheeler, for the sum of L9O, for damages sustained through his mare getting bogged in a trench cut for water pipes nt the orossing from lire Street into Thames Street.

It was resolved, "That Messrs. Newton and Mirams be informed that the Council do not consider themselves responsible for any damages,'' A letter was read from the Manager of the Ardgowan and Totara Estates, asking for a tracing showing the land referred to by the Council. It was resolved, " That the Engineers be requested to furnish the tracings asked for. It was proposed by Councillor Headland, seconded by Councillor Humphrey, and carried—

That the Government he informed that the Council, haying fo.unded all their calculations of expenditure upon the continued receipt of the Government subsidy, and having undertaken the of a most complete <-\nd cqmprehensive system of water supply, involving a very great expenditure, are decidedly of opinion that the loss of the Government subsidy will have a most disastrous effect upon that undertaking, and therefore respectfully request that the. vernment will see fit to continue fhe subsidy, or make such qther arrangements as will prevent the Council suffering ajny diminution of its income-" J The following circular and resolutions from the Christchurah Borough Council were referred to the Legislative Committee : March, 23rd. 188Q, The Town Clerk, Oamaru. curried, "That the petitioners be informed that, while the Council admits the necessity for the work, regret that they cannot accede to.their request at present." The Finance Committee's report, as follows, was read and adopted : Oamaru, April 14. The Finance Committee held their ti3ti.nl meeting this evening, and have to report that, having considered Mr. Anderson's] letter, in which he expresses a wish to close up the account between himself and the Council, are of opining that as the Council are not in a position to know what claims they may yet have upon him in respect of the pipes, and as he has not yet provided the yarn for the pipes, in fulfilment of his arrangement so to do, your Committee cannot recommend the Council in the meantime to accede to his request. The following accounts were passed for payment;— Ordinary accounts, LlOl & lid: snwworks, L9i> I~s i)d ; waterworks, L 1079 Us 3d. Da the motion of Councillor Otteraon, seconded t>y Councillor Humphrey, it was resolved " That the Council take advice as to the steps necessary to- bring the Council under the whole of the Municipal Corporations Act, IS7G ; and that the matter be left with the Legislative Committee and the mover and seconder to confer with the solicitor and draw up the report for next meeting." It was proposed by Councillor Koberts, seconded by Councillor Smith, and carried, " That the Engineer's suggestion to the Waterworks Committee not to place more material on the dam at the reservoir than the amount stated in Wallace's contract be approved of." It was resolved to refer the matter of the camp at Papakaio to the Waterworks Committee, with power to act. !

The Gasworks Committee were empowered to accept tenders for the supply of lime, and the Council then went into Committee.
