WELLINGTON. ' V-April 14.. At a meeting of the Licensed Victuallers' Association this afternoon, the question of forming a Licensed Victuallers' Insurance Company for the colonies was discussed, but ultimately postponed to allow of jlata being collected, which will •be presented ..to the 'conference at a meeting in June; ' A deputation was appointed 'tp ;waitr-on:- the- Commissioner of Police, requesting that active steps be taken to. suppress sly grog-selling; ' It is believed the Retrenchment Com--mittee of the City Council Will recommend rigid economy in expenditure and the cutting;down of expenses in everyway, including pro rata reductions in all salaries and wages. At a meeting of the Harbor Board, the report of the sub-committee appointed to interview the Government relative to endowments for the Board was received. It stated that at the request of the committee the Government agreed to hand over to the Harbor Board the new railway wharf, with a smail piece of ground lying between the wharf and the main line of rails, on which a shed could be erected. They also agreed to hand to the Board about three-quarters of an acre of ground on the : reclamation, and would possibly give oiie or two other sections on the same reclamation, not disposed of at public sale last year. They would also make over to the Board all reserves in connection with the pilot and signal stations, subject .to .the.ir.being used for. the purposes for which they • were set apart. • The Ministers also, gave a favorable answer to the request that the Government- would -vest in'the Board the right of the whole of the foreshore round the harbor, including the shores of Evans's Bay, subject to. .any reserves the. Govern-; ment might Require from time to time for jail way or other purposes. Twenty single and five married men of the unemployed are to be sent to Wanganui for the purpose of road-making near Murimotu." '• ;: ' .. DUNEDIN. ; April 14. During the past half-year the Tipperary Mining Company paid as dividends a sum equal to L 4 per share.' •• At yesterday's annual meeting of the Standard Property Investment Society a dividend of ten per cent, was declared. A painter named Fotterill,' living at Richmond Hill, Mornington, attempted to commit suicide tliis morning. About a quarter to five his wife was awakened by hearing a Heavy fall on the flobr and found that her husband had.cut his throat. Dr. Fergusson was soon summoned to his attendance. The man is out of danger. He had been out of work for some time, and had of late been in a very depressed state of mind.
April 15. Butler's case is being taken in the presence of a crowded court. The prisoner, who is undefended,- exercised the full right to challenge the Crown, and challenged two jurors. OHRISTCHURCH. '' April 13. ■ The last cricket match of the season today was marked, as indeed the whole season has been, bya fine display of batting. The match was arranged between a number of English gentlemen on a visit, aided by some lawyers, and a Ohristchurch Eleven." The former went in first and made 220, of which Mr. E. W. "Wellington, late of the Oxford Eleven, made 141. ;The only other good scores were Reeves 40 and Harbottle 17. The local team had only time to get 33 runs for the loss of a wicket. A similar score of 141 was made by A. M. Olliver early in the season, which, with Ashby's 112, makes the third century on the same ground this season. April 15. A walking match is arranged for May 20th, at Ohristchurch, between Bowley, Ohristchurch, and Oonnor, Timaru. Distance 7 miles. LIOO aside, Two thoroughbred brood mares arrived Per Palala for G. Stead yesterday. WANGANUI. April 15. The steeplechase meeting is fixed for June 19. The programme consists of Handicap Steeplechase of 175 sovs ; Maiden Steeplechase of 75 sovs ; Weight for Age Steeplechase of 50 sovs; and Consolation of 30 sovs. Nominations for the handicap will close on May 15. It is proposed to give Mr. Freeman Jackson, the Hon. Secretary of the Club, a testimonial in recognition of his services in raising Wanganui to the front rank among the racing meetings of the Colony, GREYMOUTH. April 14. An elderly man named John Henderson dropped down dead this morning in the Government workshop. A . verdict was returned, that: deceased died from heart disease. TIMARU. April 14. At the R.M. Court to-day, the charge of perjury against Janjes M'Leish, arising out of the late riot cases over the' possession of sheep, was dismissed. ..Another similar charge has yet to .be heard. The ship Comadre, which sailed for London to-day, discharged and loaded over 1600 tons in nine working days, an exceptional amount of other shipping work being done during the same time. BALOLUTHA. April 14. Messrs. Blair, Bell, and Higginson, engineers, arrived here to-day, and have been-engaged talking" evidence as to ' the cause: of the damage to Inch Clutha and neighborhood during the floods of 1878. Eleven persons have bderi examined; The enquiry.is no_t yet concluded.
