(PER press association.) WELLINGTON. April 13. The Government steamer Stella leaves on a trip to the Southern Lighthouse tomorrow. After visiting Paysegur Point, she proceeds to the Auckland Islands to ascertain if there is any truth in the report that some sealers are cast awaj 7 there. Sir William Fox has announced himself a candidate for the Rangitikei se&t in Parliament, vacated by the resignation of Major Willis. April 14. A fire broke out at one o'clock this morning in a three-roomed cottage in Cuba Street. When the flames were first observed they had a good hold. The building was totally destroyed. The house was empty, the inmates having removed the previous day, How the fire originated is unknown. The cottage was owned by Mr. Henn.
A cottage was burnt this morning and was insured for Ll5O in the South British Company. The proprietor of the Victoria Hotel was fined L 5 for Sunday trading. At the Supreme Court the case of M'Shane v. O'Malley, an action for LIOOO damages for injuries sustained by plaintiff while blasting at the reclamation works through the alleged negligence of defendant the contractor, is being heard. It is stated that the Colonial Insurance Co. will declare a div. of ten per cent at the annual meeting on Monday. The report is also said to be satisfactory. DUNEDIN. April 13. The reported cfvsp of small-pox at Forbury has no foundation in fact, April 14, A sum of Ll5O has been collected for a presentation of plate to Mr. Hallenstein, of the New Zealand Clothing Factory, who is leaving for Europe. Mr. Hallenstein asked that the money should be placed towards founding a fund for the amelioration of the distress amongst his employzs, which was dope, the firm supplementing it by 50 soverejgng. A South Dunedin publican was robbed of L4O, which he had left in his till. CHRISTOI-rORCS. ' April 13.
During the past year there have been 82 fires in Canterbury, on which claims have been paid to the amount of L 55,440 ; of this L 32,000 was for fires in Christ; church. For some months, however, there has been no blaze here—ever since, in fact, the lad Osborne was arrested. Tlio case against Graham Flowers, for stealing 15 head of cattle from Walker Bros., valued at L.135, was hoard to-day at ]£aTigjoF3. A largo amount of evidence was heard, and ultimately thp accused was formally committed to the next sitting of the Supreme Court, Bail was accepted.

At yesterday's meeting of the board of conservators the chairman was authorised to advertise for tenders for L3OOO debentures at 8 per cent, for five years currency, and at 9 per cent, for two years. At a third meeting of ratepayers held last night relative to the drainage rate Mr. Hubbard, the surveyor, made some peculiar disclosures as to the preparation of the specification at the Drainage Board office. Resolutions were carried unanimously expressing strong dissatisfaction of the district relative to drainage matters generally.
AUCKLAND. April 13. A deputation from the Harbor Board interviewed Mr. Oliver re the railway reclamation works. They denied that silting was taking place, and suggested that the railway terminus should be at the junction of Custom House and Fort-streets instead of being carried to Queen-street Wharf. Mr. Oliver said that as far as possible he would give effect to the wishes of the commercial public. Mr. Oliver declined to receive any further deputations to-day owing to indisposition. GRAHAMSTOWN. ' April-14. Mr. Oliver comes to the Thames via Waikato, Mr. Sheehan accompanying him. The Government have forwarded L3OOO to the county for the construction of a road through the Tukukino land to the Upper Thames. An active canvass is being prosecuted to place qualified persons on the roll-. It is anticipated that over 5000 electors will be returned. GISBORNE. April 13. Capt. Gudgeon, A.C., has been ordered to proceed to Waimate Plains. HQKITIKA. April 13. The Albion has sailed for Melbourne. She took with her from this port 56350z. of gold, shipped by the Bank of New Zealand and the Union Bank, TIMARU.April 13. At the District Court to-day, George Cliff, ex-Mayor of Timaru, applied for his order of discharge, but Judge Ward suspended it for eighteen months.
