The Emperor of Russia has returned to St. Petersburgh from Livadia, after the recent attempt. upon his life. In honor of the 83 rd anniversary of the birthday of the Emperor of Germany, a Stfite dinner was given in the Winter Palace, at which the Corps Diplomatique was largely represented. The Czar, in replying to the toast of his health, made reference to the existing relations between Russia and the other European Powers, and more particik larly with Germany. He expressed a hope that the Emperor William would live to celebi'ate his birthday for years to come.
His Holiness the Pcipp in common with the several potentates of Europe, addressed, a letter to the Emperor of Russia, conveying his congratulations upon the occasion of the 25th anniversary of his accession tf> the throne. In this document allusion was made to the case of the Roman Catholic hierarchy in Poland, on behalf of whom Leo Xlll. craved certain privileges. The Czar's reply was formal in tone, and evasive on the ppint submitted. Tfie Pgpe" feels deeply chagrined by the ill-suceess of his efforts.
