(EER PRESS ASSOCIATION.) I WELLINGTON. : April 11. Major Willis has resigned his seat for Rahgitikei.. .Probably Sir William Fox and Mr. M'Lean will be. candidates for the vacant seat.. Eversley, the steeplechaser, bound, to Auckland per Arawata, jumped out of the box this afternoon and went down the hold, a distance of about seven feet, fortunately without injury. April 12. Nothing has been heard of the three young men who went out duck shooting in a boat on the Wairarapa Lake on Friday. The police and other parties are ; still searching. The names of the men are Francis Cross (19), George Cooley (20), and Deverage (15). DUNEDIN. April 11. A fire occurred at two o'clock this morning on the premises of A. and T. Burt, brass, founders and lead pipe manufacturers. The origin is unknown. Considerable damage was done to the machinery, but the loss is covered by insurance in the National office. CHRISTOHURCH. April 10.

The Waimakariri River has been in flood for the last two days, but no damage has been reported. At a meeting of the Canterbury Anglers' Society last night, Dr. Campbell stated that the trout placed in Little River,, and which had grown to a large size, were being poisoned by water impregnated with sawdust from the sawmills erected along the banks of the river. April 11.

A man, whose name at present is unknown, fell off a train near Rakaia last night, and was killed. He was a laborer, and was. sitting on the platform. The body was a good deal mangled. April 12. At Rangiora on Saturday a man named Joseph Summers was run over by a dray, which fractured his leg.

The lad M'Kay, who fell over the cliff on Friday,, died the next day. In the report of the recent parish meeting at Kaiapoi, it was shown that the Rev. D. Hampden, the incumbent, had conducted 560 services during year, taught in the Sunday school, and officiated as choir master. For all these services he only received L 57 10s during the year, there being now three-quarters of his annual stipend due to him. During the present month five vessels have been despatched from Port Lyttelton to the United Kingdom, having an aggregate tonnage of 5447 tons. During the month. seven vessels, giving a total of 8198 tons, have arrived to load for Home. At the present time there are eleven vessels, representing 12,850 tons on the berth for London and other ports of the United Kingdom. Mr, G. Mangin, of Greendale, has just threshed 5*2 bushels of wheat per acre from a 30 acre paddock, and 50 bushels of barley from another paddock. In the Supreme Court this morning the case of Bracken v. Price (alias Darrell), for' libel, was not tried, the defendant

objecting to a common jury. M'Millan, a saddler, was arrerted on Saturday for concealment of goods, and discharged..... The number, of bags of grain carried on the Christchurch section on Friday and Saturday last was 25,855. On Saturday night 167§ bags accumulated at the various stations along the line. Arrived—Anne Hill, brigantine, from the Bluff; Saxon, schooner, from Kaiapoi. AUCKLAND. April 12. The fifteenth half-yearly meeting of the South British Insurance Company was held this afternoon. The report states that the income for fire and marine premiums has been L 61,385 14s sd; from investment, L 5,823 10s 5d ; and from transfer fees, -L5 ss; making a total of L 67,214 9a Bd, to which has been added L 4,051 Qs 9d, brought forward from the previous half-year. The total expenditure has been—fire and marine losses paid and outstanding, L 3,909 15s 8d ; reinsurance, L 1.4,436 19s, and with LSOOO dividend paid L 63,922 16s ; leaving a balance of L 7,343 3s sd, from which the directors recommend the payment of a dividend at the rate of ten per cent per annum.

The High School \yas formally opened by the Mayor to-day. There, was a large attendance of ladies and gentlemen. Speeches were made referring to the educational policy of the colony and the munificence of the Government. ' Tukukino has destroyed the fascines lately placed on the road through the BLomato settlement. Some details in the arrangement displeased him. AmannamedHenryPiggett was severely injured by a fall of earth in the Alburnia mine this morning. A large committee was appointed at a public meeting to. take steps to have the electoral roll filled up.
