..MELBOURNE. The Argus of March 31 reports : In the import market scarcely any business ■was done .throughout the day, and, in fact, it may he said that the holidays -were not fairly over before to-day; some of the mercantile offices were not opened at all, and others' were! closed at an early hour. An attempt wa3 made in the morning to hold an auction sale of but nothing -whatever was done, -while the business reported privately was not of a character to afford material to found a report upon. Wheat was sold at 4s 7d for a small "off" lot, while a line of 300 .bags was taken for shipment at 4s 7Ad, delivered ex store. Flour maintains a quotation of 19 15s and LIO, according to brand and. quantity. At the first-named nguicu. 20 tons was placed, but there 13 little aniiiun.-- evinced in the market. The week's arrivals country districts show a considerable reduction, consequent upon the holidays. Deliveries of wheat at Spencer Street figure at -U).577-bags, and of flour at 3958 bags. We also observe that 426(5 bags of wheal and 500 bag 3 of flour went forward direct to Williamstown. Oats are quoted at 23 2d to 2a 4d for common to good feeding, but we are without business to report. Maize has been sold at 2s 7Ad for medium, while best cjnality is quoted at 2s 9d. The market is likely to improve; as Sydney telegrams have been received instructing consignees to hold shipments, as there was none coming forward. Sugar is quiet, but the market will be stimulated to-morrow by the ofler of the Marie's cargo, consisting of 2350 bags and 1341 pockets of Mauritius sugar. _ Teas have not been much looked after. Kerosene oil has had more inquiry. About 1000 eases have been run off in parcels at Is Id. A line of 1000 cases diamond has also been placed on private terms. A shipment of 20 tons caustic soda, 70 percent, has. been taken up at a full price. In liquids we note sales of dagger stout at Ss G<l.
