Money "Wigram's steamship Kent arrived in Plymouth to-day from Australia. .April 7. The election returns so 'far show tliat' the Liberals have gained 67 seats •which were held last Parliament, by Conservatives, 5 seats having been won since the sth inst. The Liberals are, however, being less successful in the counties. Mr, Parnell, Home Ruler, who represented County Meatli in tjie last House, has been elected for Cork. St. Petersburgh. April 7.
An official denial has been given to the report which recently gained cuiv rency to the effect that China had shown open hostility towards Prussia by despatching troops across the-river Amoor, and that the latter had committed acts of aggression towards the inhabitants of Kuldja. Bombay, April 7. The reported death of -Mahomed Jan, leader of the Afghan tribes at Ghuznee, is denied. Berlin, April 6. Tjie Federal Council has rejected Prince Bismarck's Stamp Duties, and in consequence of the action taken Prince Bismarck has resigned. The Hon, Duncan Gillies, Commissioner of Railways, in reply tq a depur tation, said that the railway loan would be floated in two months' time. An application which was made in Banco, against D. Syme, proprietor of the Melbourne Age, for commenting on an action for libel "while still sub judice, has been discharged, defendant regretting having made comments, and paying all costs. Obituary—Mr. Menzies, hotelkeeper. Sydney, April 8. In the Legislative Assembly last night the Bill to define the powers of the Legislative Council was read a second time. Sir Henry Parkes, the Premier, stated that he would proceed no further with the Bill until ft similar measure, which hacl been introduced in the Upper House, had been dealt with.
The following Exhibition awards were announced: —Furniture—Seufi'ert, Auckland, specially commended; Ist class, Large and.Townley, Napier, and Carl Peters, Wellington; 2nd class, Guthrie and Larnach, Dunedin, and Nichollson, Wellington; 3rd class, Burt, Dunedin. First class awards were made to Burt, for gasaliers, Petersen, Christchurch (special) for silver jug, and Guthrie and Larnaqh for hall door. Second class awards were made to Greenfield and Stewart for mantelshelf ; Halley, Ewing, and Stewart (all of Wellington), for doors; and Sandstein, Christchurch, for epergne. Third class awards were made to Scott for stoves, and Child and White, Christchurch, for cone work.
