LATEST HOME AND FOREIGN NEWS. (keuter : s telegram, phr press association) London, March 31. Consols are at 98^. Adelaide wheat has declined one shilling, and is now quoted at 58s per 4961b, ex warehouse, Australian beef and mutton tallow are unchanged. The wool market is strong. The arrivals for next auction sales amount to 170,000 bales. The Oriental Bank Corporation pays a dividend of 2 per cent, for the half year, and the Bank of South Australasia pays 5J per cent., and carries forward LBOOO, ! April 1. The general • elections still continue. 90 Liberals and 61 Conservatives have now been returned for the new Parliament. : The Liberals have so far raised 25 seats which were held in the last Parliament by the Conservatives and the latter have gained nine seats formerly held by Liberals. The elections for Birmingham resulted in the return of Messrs. John Bright, Muntz, and Chamberlain, formerly liberal members. For Hackney, the late Liberal members, Messrs. Holmes and Fawcett, have both been rejected. : For Westminister, the Hon. W. H. Smith, First Lord of the Admiralty, and Sir Charles Russell, both Conservative members, have .been returned.
DIRECT AUSTRALIAN NEWS. (reoter's telegram per press association. ) Sydney, April 2. The Government has made a call of j a quarter of the special deposit with the Banks, leaving L 1,475,000 still qn deposit. It is understood that money beiug easier, the banks were agreeable to the -withdrawal being made. Sir Henry Parkes introduced into the Assembly last night a Bill for depriving the Council for the future of the power to amend money Bills. He made a lengthy speech on the occasion. Sir Arthur Stephen also introduced into the Council a Bill having the same effect as that now before the Assembly. Melbourne, April 2, The works in connection with Sir John Coode's scheme at Fisherman's Bend and Yarra Yarra are actively proceeding. A further meeting has been held for the formation of a Frozen Meat Company, with a capital of LIOO,OOO. Already L 13,000 have been subscribed. The" Cabinet have decided to reduce Mr, Benjamin Berry, -who was promoted by Mr. Graham Berry shortly before the resignation of the Jale j Ministry, to his former rank in the Civil Service.
