OAMARU JOCKEY CLUB'S AUTUMN MEETING

President—Mr J. W. Humphrey; "VicePresident —Mr. T. Y.. Duncan Judge —Mr W. J. Steward ; SecreWy—Mr W. M. Southan; Treasurer—Mr. J. Moss ; Handicapper—Mr M. Sherwin ; Starter—Mr T. Shalders ; Clerk of the Course—Mr It. Smart; Clerk of the Scales—W. Bee ; Committee—Messrs Paterson, Shalders, Hardy, Greenfield,. M. Grant, M'Corkindale, and F. W. 0.. Grant. Though most of the races: yesterday brought out small fields, and some of: them produced anything but exciting - finishes, the sport on the whole was very good, and the Committee of the Oamaru< Jockey Club are to be congratulated upon, having carried through the meeting so*, successfully. Not a single dispute of any; kind occurred, and this is particularly worthy of note seeing that Oamaru haat in the past obtained an unenviablb notoriety for disputes over races. Everyone worked hard to make things go. jiltoasantly, and it is sufficient to say thair lilhey were rewarded with success. Mr. Shaswin, the handicapper, is deserving of & special word of praise for the manner- is* which he brought the horses togethes:. With a few exceptions the finishes were very close, and in this respect particular mention may be made of the Autumn Handicap run yesterday. In this the fourstarters ran in a cluster almost all the way round and at the finish there was not: two lengths difference between the first , and third horses. It was a matter for regret • that more owners were not represented, but; this was attributable rather to the small- • ness of the stakes than to any diaaatia--faction with the handicapping. It isdiojjedl that next year the Club, which is. rapidly/ gaining in strength and popularity, will I be able to issue a much more tempting, programme, and that there will bo at • least three races with stakes sufficiently - large to bring together many of the best: horses in the Colony. Here we would . suggest that next year the Club should,. direct all its energies to one really good . meeting, instead of having two meetings . each occupying two days. We know that the Committee have been actuated in the > past by a desire to. pay off the many liabilities left as, a legacy by the old Club,. and for this, they are deserving of every - praise.. The following is the conclusion of our/ report of yesterday's racing : Novel. Race of 50 sovs; the winner Ito> be sold immediately after the race the* whole of the proceeds to go to the race: funds; nomination, 12; once round. Mr.. J. The lot were sent away to a fair start, Deception being the first to show in front, while May Morn, who was slow in getting , away* brought up the rear. In tllias order the three ran until reaching the back of jthe course, when Adamant drew ahead,, and gradually increased thfy distance-, between himself and Deception, while* May Morn slightly improved her position.. The race was now virtually over, for though May Morn made an effort to catch the leader when coming round the end of the course to enter the straight, Adamant was landed an easy winner by about three lengths, Deception being some distance in the rear of May Morn.
