In (acknowledging three cheers given for his " better half," tjie gallant gentleman said, that Mrs. was not entirely ignorant of military life. She was in Hawkes Bay when bloodthirsty and infuriated savages were close to the doors of the settlers, acd she had to share with other ladies in the district the anxiety felt when husbands and brothers were away repelling the enemy. He had seen tha men of Hawkes Bay under fire at a time of gr&at danger, and he could say, Itaving had some experience in these matters, thdt their bravery could not be surpassed by any European troops. As a matter of fact, had it not been for the bold front shown by them, and the action taken at the time by the Hawkes Bay Volunteers, he was sure that great disasters svoald have ensued in this part of the colony. The ladies at that time gave great assistance, and much credit was due to them for the manner ia which they bore their anxieties.
