The is from >2O miles north to 16 miles ■oath of the latitude of the mouth of the Taieri River, sad is all from 2 to 38 milea to the northward of the Cloth* River at its mouth, Invercargill being 3 miles due south of the latitude of the Clutha, the average height above the sea level being' 230 feet. The average quality of the soil is equal to any in the Australasian Colonies, and from climatic influences is capable of growmgnot merely excellent wheat, but firsi-clafs oats and barley, is peculiarly adapted for raising turnips and artificial grasses, thereby enabling the farmer to keep his land in perfect heart by a rotation of cropping; manure Ms land by feediugoEF his green crops with sheep and cattle, and keep him Independent of a bad market for any particular cereal. AH over the district there is firstclass limestone cropping out to fertilise the land when it may require it. Forests of large extent are scattered over it, providing timbers for building and fencing, and coal (lignite the best brown coals) for fuel everywhere obtainable. The distriot is further intersected by railways, which open up the great valleys of Aparima. Greti, and Mataura Rivers; while a loop line from the Invercargfll to Kingston Railway at Lumsdem runs through the Waimea Plains and joins the Invercargill to Donedin main line at Core, and a line through the Forest Hill District will be constructed shortly. Thus carriage of produce to the seaboard or market is easy and cheap from any part of it ; -and timber, lime, and coal, can be distributed all over the country at a minimum cost. The average yield of cereals per acre, taken from the statistics of the Cotony for the years ISTS to 1878, as compared with Canterbury, are as follow : h* t-- r-» CO cO GO CO CO CO Ths subjoined tables give the average temperature at Invercargill, Dunedin, and Chriatcborcb, the commercial centres of the districts. It may be remarked that Invercargfll being situated close toFoveaox Straits is exposed to moreiainfali and sudden changes the interior of the district, only seven miles due north, where the climate is both drier and warmer, tut along the whole seahoard the land is extremely fertile, and much prized for grass and root crops. The experience of the last few years leads to the conviction that for all-round agriculture the supply'of rain by no means exceeds the requirements of the land. This year the thermometer at Invercargjll has averaged Msther than any part of the Middle Island, and most parts of the North Island, while there has been very considerably leas rainfall in any part of the Colony.
