ORIGINAL CORRESPONDENCE.

OUR COLONIAL BOYS.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE OAMARU MAIL. Sir, —So ! it appears from your contemporary's anonymous correspondent " Beware" that there are two or three lada (how exact he is), who do hot respect the proprieties in our dear city of Oamaru. These two or three lads, so "Beware" says, followed three young ladies, and indulged in certain offensive remarks. Now. Sir, if , this was the case, surely a legal remedy exists, and "Beware," iu not taking the legal steps to punish the offenders, must be held asviolating tha law equally with those two 91 three lads. But, Sir, if this statement of u Beware;" is—as I believe it to be—downright fudge, invented to excuse the gross, wanton, and highly indecent attack on the ladies, aa also the young men of Oamaru, what, then ?. By the way, Mr. " Beware" does not' say if the young ladies he anonymously champions are exempt from the charges , made so sweepingly by your contemporary in his silly leader as to loudness, hoidenishness, &c. Sir, my former letter was not in excuse of any actual cage of rowdyism, but in complaint of the indirect, and. wholesale charges made against all our young men and maidens, their mothers, " cousins and their aunts," a,nd Mr. " Beware," in supporting in part these gross insults, supports them practically in full, and thus leaves your contemporary's original offence in a worse condition. Sir, I extremely deplore the primary caase of this discussion, and must express surprise that your contemporary has not seen fit to most abjectly apologise for his most foul offence. —I am, &c., Pffltox, Oamaru, March 15, 1880,
