FIRE IN SOUTHLAND.
iNVERCAUGiLii, March-11. A deplorable accident, that will havo the effect of throwing about 60 persons* out of work, occurred this morning alfc about 5 o'clock. Messrs. Guthrie and) Larnach's extensive sawmills at Woodgnd,'* on the Invercargill and Bluff railway line,, were discovered to be on fire,, th,e. flames, having so strong a hold, that tko whole? of the main premises were doomed, to de-i struction. In a very short space of time everything was destroyed > including tho main building and attached smithy, tho saw-sharpening, locomotive, and ether sheds. The main structure contained 20,000 feet of dressed timber and the most complete plant in Southland, including a four-horse power engine. The value of the whole plant is estimated at orer L6OOO, and as far as is known it is only insured as follows ; —North British and Mercantile, L 250 on building and LSOO on machinery and plant j Transatlantic, L 250 on machinery and LSOO on buildings, and plant; South British, LIOOO oi\ engine and building, LSOO re-insured iifc the Colonial j also L3O in the Tjfana-.
