The; balance not sent Home will be handed to. the treasurer of the fund being raised for : transmission Home. The Government are engaging 150 men: for road work on the Waimate Plains. Married men are to receive 28s, and single men 21s per week. They will be provided with tents, and their families will be sent up free. They will be supplied with rations at Is 3d per day, and: can leave whenever more remunerative work offers. February 26. A man named John Connolly, an extelegraph operator, was charged with im-; posing on the relieving officer by obtaining half-a-crown, and spending it in beer. He was sentenced to four weeks' hard labor. On another charge of imposing on a tradesman he received a similar sentence. DUNEDIN. February 25. The captain and officers of H.M.S. Cor? morant, npw lying in - Lyttelton Harbor, are coming' down to the ra6es, and it is probable they will also attend the ball to be given by the - Otago Rowing Club oii Friday, for which his Excellency the Governor arid Lady Robinson, have accepted invitations. The Chinaman who arrested at Cromwell, charged with 'selling spurious gold, has been discharged, the police failing to prove the sale by him. CHRISTCHURCH. February 25. 1 A farm in Preb'bleton has'given yields of 44, 48, and 56, bushels per acre from three paddocks. The land has been cropped for many years, and received no special- preparation. He announced that he intended to prosecute criminally the writer of a letter in the Ashburton Guardian and Herald newspapers, making certain charges against him, which he stated he intended to give the writer the opportunity of proving his assertions in a Court of Justice. AUCKLAND. February 26. Mr. Maxwell, of the Public Works: Office, Auckland, denies that the harbor is silting up through the stoppage of the reclamation works. The steamer Suva, trading between Melbourne and Fiji, will in future coal a ! t the Bay of Islands, calling at Auckland on' the way to Fiji, for cargo and passengers. . Willis Peltyer, formerly a French refugee, to-day summoned Bishop, the owner of the Griffin, which conveyed the Communists from Noumea, for assault;. The evidence shows that the complainant went aboard to complain to the owner that his luggage had been detained. On which an altercation occurred, and Bishop, pushed him over the vessel. The Bench dismissed the case.
TIMARU. February 25. A storekeeper at Waitolii flat, named Thomas Liston, was to-day fined LSO and costs for sly grog-selling. During the past ten weeks the breakwater has been extended 130 feet. The Harbor Board have decided to at once commence the erection of wharfage for 300 feet along the inside of-the breakwater. The depth of water ranges "from 8 to 18 feet at low water. :. _ ' Very little business is yet being done iii the grain market. Merchants offer 3s 3d to 3s 9d for wheat, .while farmers stand" out for 4s, and if they cannot get. that figure, will ship Home direct on their own account. . Harvest operations are well forward, and there is no doubt now that the yield wil| be the heaviest ever known in the district. February 26. . „ J. B. Witt, confectioner, was aroused at 2 o'clock this morning by the noise of a supposed burglar. Arming himself with a poker, he' 'proceeded--to" his. back, door, where he met,a tall, stout-built man. A ferocious struggle ensued, ending in the trespasser escaping, and Witt securing liis hat.' - With the aid of this, a man named John Bushby, a stranger, was arrested this morning. . When brought before the Bench, he pleaded drunkenness, but was sentenced- to. a fortnight's imprisonment.
