A deputation waited upon Mr. Rolleston to grant a special settlement to working men here who had formed themselves into a society. Mr. Rolleston held that the better plan would be for them to take up land on the deferred payment system, as special settlements involved great difficulty, He gave rfo definite answer, as sufficient information was not laid before liiiq, but offered facilities to applicants to go round to inspect aud choose a block, when they could communipate with him again. Yesterday morning a fire broke out in the back kitchen of Hathaway's store, East Oxford. The building was soon burned down. The East Oxford- Town Hall caught fire before assistance could arrive, and was also destroyed.

Complaints are made of fires in the Rakaia district, caused by locomotives, and which are very dangerous, and threaten to burn valuable crops if not seen to in time.

. A reaper and binder at work in a field in the Rakaia district caught fire by some means, and. was burned. The horses were saved and so was the crop, with some trouble. The machine is supposed to have been wanting oil on its bearings, or a lighted match was carelessly thrown into it. ■ .

The insurances on the East Oxford fire are—Town Hall, L3OO in the South British ; Hathaway's store and contents, LIOO in the National and L 525 in thp Xew Zealand. Very little was saved, from either place, except the furniture from the Hall.
