OAMARU SCHOOLS COMMITTEE.

The monthly meeting, of tho Schools Committee was held last evening at.the Secretary's office. There were presentMessrs. Fleming (Chairman), Smith, Bee, Mitchell, Mollison, Forrester, a,nd Stevenson. The minutes ?of. the previous meeting were read and confirmed.— The- Secretary to the Education Board wrote; intimating- that the pupil, teachers for the North and South Schools recommended by'the" Committee could not be appointed at present, as the. staffs ,were, according; to; t'he ißoard's .regulations, full.: The appointment.of additional teachers could not be made until after the'receipt of the current quarter's returns, and if the average attendance "of the schools was such 3 '"as"'to ' justify'; the : employment of additional pupil teachers' the -applications would be granted. • . . r The Committee then proceeded to vote for three candidates for the vacant seats on i he-Education Board, arid, on tho motion of Mr. Bee, seconded t by .' Mr. j Smith, it was unanimously resolved to vote for Messrs. H. Clark, J. Fulton, and S. 32. Shvimskii It was, resolved that the Secretary should write to the., various Schocfl Committees in the County requesting them to .assist in securing the return of. Mr. Shrimski as a member of the Board, and to the Palmerston School Committee thanking them;, for the action they had taken - towards securing the return of a member of the Board to repre-. sent North Otago. . . ■The following letter from Mr. Lindsay,, headmaster of the North School was read : ' "Sir, —I have the honor to make the following report re the North School. There are now 402 scholars on the roll, with an average weekly attendance for the la : st two weeks of 375." The buildings at present are capable of containing; only about 300 with any degree of comfort. I trust that your Committee will take im-mediate-steps to - provide the necessary accommodation required. I send a list of streets, showing the numbers of children attending school who live in these 1 streets. You will see from it that very nearly all our scholars reside in the immediate vicinity of the school.—l am, &c., " Jas. Lindsay." On the motion of Mr. Forrester, seconded by Mr. Mitchell, it was resolved that copies of the letter and its enclosure' should be forwarded to the Education Board with a recommendation. that the application fee favorably entertainedThe Committee then proceeded to consider the appointment of a matron to the High School, for which position there' were only two eligible candidates. .. Some discussion tools 'place upori the'matter, during which .it was Urged that the position was a most important one, chat , upon making a gocd selection of, a matron greatly depended the success of the school, and that the Committee had not sufficient information before them to enable them to come to a decision as to the relative merits of the candidates. It was ultimately resolved on the motion of Mr. Smith, that the Chairman and the ;Rector of the High School should be requested to satisfy themselves as to the qualifications of the. candidates, and report to a special meeting to be held at half-past seven o'clock on Tuesday evenirig. ■ The meeting terminated with the usual vote of thanks to the Chairman.
