The Pall Mall Gazette, in an article on the experimental shipment of meat from Australia, says that the success which has attended the experiment will prevent England being dependent for supplies upon foreign countries. It deplores the prospects before the English farmers, but rejoices in the personal success of Messrs. Duffy, Patersoi), and Ireland. February 12. It is reported that Persia occupies Herat, and will assist England in Afghan. England will construct a railway from Herat to the Persian Gulf. The Russian newspapers dared Persia to reject friendship. (KECTER'S telkcram, pbr press association) London, February 11. The latest intelligence from the Cape of Good Hope states that the House of Assembly has been prorogued. The Colonial .Secretary announced that it i? the intention of the Government to introduce a series of resolutions with a view of confederation of the whole of the South African Colonies. February 12. The Journal de St. Petersburgh contradicts the statement that Persia has been released from her treaty obligation to occupy Herat, and declares in positive terms that, if Persia rejects the friendship of Russia for that of England, she doe? so at her peril. A statement has obtained currency that Russia will further increase the strength of her fleet in the PaciGc. Persia proposes that a Commission should be appointed to define the northeastern boundary of her territories. Jn the meantime she states that it is her intention to occupy Afghanistan, the Province of Sustan, and eventually Herat. Ir is also generally believed that Greai Britain has assented to this arrangement. (SPECIAL TO TIIE MELBOURNE AGE.) London. February 12. The same journal has a eulogistic article on Duffy, Paterson, and three fellow countrymen.
