There, were present—Messrs. J. F. Miles and ' W.', .Gi: Watkin, Canter-/ , bury Club ; Messrs. W. H. Rotiayno •A. Thomson, North Otago Club; and Mr. 8.. Thomson,.-South Canterbury • Club. ' Mr. B. Thomson was voted to tho chair, and explained the object of "the meeting. Mr. Ronayne said that he had received a letter from the Secretary of the Southland Club, and he thought it; would bo, ; ■ well to read this before proceeding with, the business. The letter was then-read 1 , the substance of the communication' being—That 110. member of the Club could'' spare the times to act as. a delegate-at. the conference; that the Southland..: coursers were of. opinion that the Watorloo ■ meeting should bo run annually afc Oamaru or some other equally central ; position that for the presdrit it should • be confined to 32 dogs, and IG. and 8 dog stakes resulting from it; that some of the , straugera running dogs at the. meeting should he associated with the officers-of the Club over whose ground the coursing takes place ; that it was useless to look for a judge in New Zealand, and that Mr. Hayden, the Secretary of the Victorian . Coursing Club should be commissioned to look out for a judge; and that'in the event of a suitable person being obtained the Club would be prepared to pay its ? share of the cost'.'
Some little discussion thon ;took plaoa with reference to the proposal to hold the. meeting at Oaniaru, during .which it waa' pointed out by the delegates that it had been agreed that the Waterloo Cup should be run in different places. Mr. A. Thomson proposed " that ( the Waterloo ; meeting be held under the 1 management of the Canterbury Coursing. Club." He said that if the Coursing Club could not obtain the necessary oountry to course oyer, they, could avail themselves of the offer of the South Canterbury Club, Mr. Walker, in seconding. the motion,' said that it had been understood at tl o previous meeting of delegates that tl a first meeting should be held at Oamaiu as a central position, and that tl.e next should be held; either at 1 Dunedin or Cliristbhurch. He could promise that if the mooting was run at Christcliurch there would be plenty of game and oountry to course over. In anticipation of the meeting being run in. Canterbury several farmors had already been spoken to upon the matter, and they had readily agreed to give the use of their land. He Qertairily thought that the Waterloo should bo held at either Christchurch''or Invercargill, and,the courasng( men' of the' latter place did noVappoa? anxious to have it there.
The motion was carried, Mr. Ronayne thought there was some room for fault-finding on Ihe score of the largeness of the sitakeJ A 64-dbg. stake. ; with tlie purse and plate was rather too/ ' ..large, and bWupied too great an ' of time. ; -- - ! ■ 1 ! ■ 1.'.. Mr. Walker urged that it would not be a Waterloo if it was not a G4-dog stake with the usual cup, purse, and pldt'e. It occurred to him that the Conference had no power to alter the extent of the meeting, as the meeting of delegates held in.Dunedia A. last; year had decided that tlie Waterloo Cup should be i for : G4'dogs. " - T:: It was thpn agreed that the stake should be for 64 dogs. j The appointment of a judge was next considered, atid during the discussion that took place' it was stated - that the only clubs that could be expeoted to join in the expenses o£ .obtaining a good i'udge were the Canterbury, South Canter* lury, [North Otago, and Southland Clubs, , the | Metropolitan (Dlanedin) Club being w defunct. • It was ultimately resolved, qp, v the. • motioii of Mr. Walker, seconded by.
