The result of the Liverpool election was the re-election of Mr. John Torr (a Tory), and the election of Mr. Whiltey (also a Tory), by a majority of 2000 over Lord Ramsay, a Liberal candidate, who, in consequence of agreeing as to the desirableness of a parliamentary enquiry into the question of Home Rule for Ireland, received the block vote of the Irish. February 7. In the House of Commons, W. A. Redmond (the member for "Wexford) moved an amendment to the address, condemning the Government for not having taken steps to alleviate the distress in Ireland by making advances to the tenantry, and demanding from the Chancellor of the Exchequer that detailed measures be at once taken. In the course of the debate the Hon. D. Plunkett, a member of the Dublin University, denounced the course pursued by Mr. Parnell. The debate was adjourned. The iron trade has become active. Galvanised is quoted at L 23 10s. February 8. It has been mutually determined to suspend operations in the war between Chili and Peru till next autumn. Bombay, February 8: Islam Khan has been wounded in a tribal quarrel, and has fled to Kandahar; (special to phess association.) London, February 6. Italy will be officially represented at the Melbourne International Exhibition. Mr. Torr carried the Liverpool election by a small majority. February 7. At a meeting of merchants in Paris, M. JJerger spoke in the highest terms of the Exhibition to be held at Melbourne. An attempt was made to intercept supplies for Cabul on Saturday last, but the intercepting force was repulsed. (SPECIAL TO THE MELBOURNE ARGUS.) London, February 7. One hundred and fiity colonists and others lunched on board the Strathleven yesterday. All were gratified at the success of the experiment. Melbourne mutton and beef were sold at Smitlifield to-day. The market was low. The first 60 sheep brought Gd per pound ; the remainder from 5M to Gd, and beef a fraction over sd. This week mutton is one halfpenny less at the English meat sales. The leading butchers are highly pleased, and pronounce the meat equal to anything they have seen. Private advices received state that the beef and mutton by the Strathleven both fetched 7d per lb. Melbourne, February 0. Mi-. Berry is to speak at Geelong tonight, and unfold the Ministerial programme. The general elections have been fixed to come off on Februarv 28.
