REAPER AND BINDER CONTEST AT TIMARU.
This contest took place on Saturday List, under the auspices of the Timaru Agricultural and Pastoral Association, in a paddock of oats, the straw of which was about six feet long, and too long when cut about a foot from the ground to be carried by the elevators without being doubled up, and becoming entangled in the heads. The separation of the bound from the unbound 3heaf was, therefore, bad. Those machines succeeded beat that are provided with vigorous kickers, such as the Wood and Johnstone string binders. "What made the matter worse is that the crop had been inclined by the wind. SeveD machines were entered for competition—the Deering, the Johnston, and the Wood string binders, and the M'Cormick, the Osborne, the Deering, and the Wood wire binders. The lastnamed was on the ground, but was not got to work, being new and not regulated. The times made were as follow Make of Machine. Hrs. Mins.
