The fortnightly service of the Orient Steamship Company to the colonies commences with the departure of the Chimborazo on the 7th February. In future the Orient Company's steamers will not carry mails either to or from Australian ports. The total reserve in notes and bullion in the Bank of England is £5,937,500. Tiie Marchioness of Lome returns to Canada to-morrow. Work in connection with the Panama Canal scheme has been commenced. Bkhi.in, January 22. The Golos of to-day announces that the Russian Government have received autheQtic information that Odessa has

The Orient Company announce that henceforth tliey will not carry mails. It is understood that mails, will be tendered, and then if the captain refuses to take them the Post Office will prosecute. (REUTERS TELEGRAM PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Sydney, January-23. The wife of Mr. Dickson, ex-Colonial Treasurer, died of tetanus, after having shot herself in the head with a revolver. The English delegate farmers proceed to New Zealand by the Ringarooma. New Zealand wheat, 4s 6d per bushel ; New Zealand oats, 2s 6d per 40 lbs ; maize, 2s 3d to 23 6d per 60 lbs. Other lines unchanged. January' 24. Mr. Carlisle, the railway traffic manager who was recently censured and fined for his conduct in connection with the Paramatta railway collision on Boxing Day, has been ordered to exchange positions with Mr. Read, traffic auditor. Mr. Carlisle will thus receive L2OO per annum less salary. Adelaide, January 23. Adelaide wheat, 5s to 5s 3d per bushel; Adelaide flour, Ll2 10s to Ll3 10s per ton. Brisbane, January 23.
