January 21. A child belonging -to Mrs. Tains wss kicked by a horse yesterday, and lies in a critical condition. The new cable to be laid across Cook Straits will arrive here about the middle of next month. The Kaiwarra Rifle Company intend asking subscriptions from all Volunteer Companies throughout the Colony in aid of the widow of Francis Donald, who was accidentally shot at the rifle range on Saturday. The Governor has given ten guineas to the Irish Belief Fund. January 22. The three-masted schooner Ellerton, which was competing in the coasters' race, went ashore at Oriental Bay. She had a bad position, and shortly after the start, in attempting to come round, the vessel would not stay. She is on a soft beach, and will not sustain any injury. DUNEDIN. January 21. Colonel Scratchley will arrive on Friday, and Colonel Staveley has been requested to have the volunteers ready for inspection. In the Supreme Court, in the case re D. Calder's will, the jury, after five minutes' deliberation, awarded the issues in favor of plaintiffs, declaring that the testator was of sound mind when he made the will, and that no coercion had been used. January 22. The City valuation amounts to L289,17G for 1880, against L 281.400 for 1879. At the City Court Mathew Pearson, a carter, was sentenced to seven days for having an under-and-over-seven board at the Blueskin show. The North Dunedin Rifles will send five representatives of the company to the Nelson meeting. CHRJSTCHURCH. January 21. A notice of the ennobled white and red wheat, grown by Mr. M. H. Mold, of Ashford, Kent, England, which appeared in the colums of the Lyttelton Times some weeks ago, attracted the attention of Mr. Solomon Lloyd, farmer, Majorca, Victoria, who has written to Mr. Murphy, j Secretary to the Agricultural and Pastoral Association, asking what steps may be (taken to have a small quantity of each I kind procured for him at any cost, with j the view of inducing the importation of this wheat into New Zealand. Sir. Murphy has transferred impressions of a woodcut of ripe grain received by him from Mr. Mold, and adding all particulars to hand, has forwarded them to the large wheat growers throughout New Zealand. As soon as a sufficient number of orders are received the Association will at once communicate with Mr. Mold.

A man named Clarkson, undergoing a sentence of 10 years' penal servitude in Lyttelton gaol, attempted to escape this morning from the hard labor gang. He was pursued and fired at and soon stopped. Two persons coming down the hill were nearly shot by the warders, who missed the prisoner. January 22.

Yesterday over eleven hundred tons of goods, in two hundred and eleven waggons, were despatched from Lyttelton. Thi3 is the largest number ever sent through the tunnel in one day. On Wednesday the horses attached to a reaping and binding machine at work on the Hon. Mr. Peacock's farm, Swatinoa, bolted, and the driver, named Fooper, fell in front of the machine. He was very seriously cut, and waa brought to the Christchurch Hospital last night. The police have again commenced the search for the body of Geo. Vennell, who is supposed to have been murdered in his house at New Brighton about the Gth of la3fc August. The Domain Board will take proceedings against several persons found fishing at night time in the Domain Gardens. The volunteers were inspected last night by Colonel Scratchley. He expressed satisfaction at their drill and battalion movements, but thought that the volunteers would gain greater proficiency if, instead of drilling in gaslight, they would make arrangements to drill in daylight now and again. At the conclusion of the inspection, the Colonel gave the officers the benefit of his experience in matters of drill.

The Canterbury Coursing Club held its annual meeting last night. The Committee recommended in their report that the' Conference of Delegates of the various Clubs should be held in Oamaru at an early date for the purpose of securing one competent judge for the season ; that the Acclimatisation Society be asked to recommend the Government 1 to proclaim a four months' season from the Ist April; and that strong endeavors be made to pbtain the consent of other Clubs to the Waterloo Gup being held this year in Canterbury. The report was adopted. During the meeting a motion was carried reducing the annual subscription to one guinea, with an entrance fee of half a guinea. AUCKLAND. January 21. The Anazi has cleared for London with a cargo of wool valued at L 24,000. Mr. James Bailey, C.8., formerly Deputy Commissioner General and Director of Land Transport with General Cameron through the war, Ijas returned on leave, to settle with his family. AIL the cases in the Cambridge Native Lands Court have been adjourned inr definitely, save one. KELSON. January 21. Genera! Davidson, who ha 3 been appointed Inspector of Volunteers for the Middle Island, arrived here this morning, where he intends permanently to residej Captain Webb, late.of the 109 th Regiment, is appointed Adjutant to the district, and entered upon his duties. NEW PLYMOUTH. January 21. A little boy named Telfer nas drowned in the Waitara river last night. TIMARU. January 21. Fully fifty feet more of the breakwater have been completed within the last month, and there is now nearly seventeen feet of water at low tide at the end.
