It appears that two seamen belonging to the barqe Bebbington had a fight, when one of.them, named Alexander Martin took a sheaf knife and severely stabbed the other man in the neck, making three incised wounds. It it stated that the captain and the doctor of the baique tried to hush up the matter_. and the police getting wind of it, have arrested Martin for unlawfully wounding: January 12.

Mr. Ludwig, a well-known jeweller, died on Saturday, and Mr. Shaw, also a well-known jeweller, died . last night. Dropsy was the c&use of death in both cases. -

At the City Police Court Charles Bilson, with five aliases, received twelve .months for stealing a coat. Seven previous convictions for larceny, since 1876, were proved against the prisoner. William Watson received twelve months oh two charges of stealing horse harness and saddlery. The quarterly attendance at the Otago schools for the quarter which ended December was 16,679 at the beginning and 17,784 at the end of the quarter. The average attendance was 7732 boys and 6905 girls, which is an increase of 1236 on the previous quarter, and the highest number ever attained in Otago. No new schools were opened during the quarter.
