A letter was read from Mr. Robert Jackson, applying on behalf of the Waiareka Library Committee for a share of the vote in aid of the libraries in tl]e riding.—The matter was ordered to lie over for a time, pending certain information being obtained. Messrs. Byrne and Mahoney wrote, asking that the Council would vote them Lll in addition to their contract for the Awamoko footbridge, as they had made a mistako in their calculations, and were consequently losers by the contract.: —The application was not entertained. 'Having carefully inspected said_ road as indicated on survey maps, with a view of opening up the road for dray traffic,, the first portion of the "road," between the river and junction with the.Awamoko road, requires scrub clearing and regulating. The second portion, at the sheep dip, culverts, drainage, and formation. Third portion, from the junction withToka Kahi road towards Livingstone,; drainage, culverts, ; and . formation. The probable cost of. said, improvements will be about Ll5O. When opened, it will be more direct, and : a; superior road to the present track.- .

2nd. Having made a careful inspection of the foundations of piers in the Kakanui bridge, there are two of the piers.not on the reef by about 6 feet, and these are now being undermined and; liable to become a total wreck the first flood. As a protection to the foundations of these piers,, we . would recommend sheet piling all round the piers, and filled in between the piles and masonry with concrete. The probable, cost fpr both piers will be about L 372. —We have, &c., Barr. and Oliver.

The question of improving the. .road from Duntroon to Livingstone was ordered to stand over. It was decided that the repairs to the Kakanui bridge should be carried out by day labor. The report from the inspector of works was read detailing the condition of the roads and the progress of contracts. He recommended that, the roads in the various ridings being all in good order, most of the surfacemen should be discharged during the harvest, as was done last year. The report was adopted. On the motion of Mr. Murcott, it was resolved that the inspector should inspect and report upon the condition of the Whare-kuri bridge. Leave of absence for one week, from the 12fch instant, was granted to Mr. Barron. Accounts to the amount of L 654 19s 9d were passed for payment, and the Council rose.
