0 WELLINGTON. January 5. At the Supreme Court, Young has been •sentenced to six months' hard labor. The native lad, Toko Mace, was next arraigned. for the defence applied to have ihim sent to a reformatory. His Honor remanded the prisoner until Wednesday, to consider the matter. This afternoon Mr. Justice Richmond referred to the gaols in New Zealand in strong terms of condemnation, terming them hotbeds of vice, in consequence of the absence of separation between different .classes of prisoners. The Hon. John Bryce takes the portfolio of Native Minister in addition to the portfolio he now holds. The passengers by the ship Bebbington were admitted to pratique tor-day. • . The barque Scottish Prince, 93 days out from London, arrived this morning, after an uneventful passage. She brings 69 adults and 44 children as passengers. One steerage passenger died during the voyage. January 6. At the. Supreme .Court the following sentences 4 were passed Thos. Wisdom (for larceny), nine months ; J. G. Lee (for larceny), two years. ; DUNEDIN. . January 5. Between November 28 and December 30 applications were received at the Immigration Office, Dunedin, ; under the nominated system for 41 spuls, equal to 37 statute adults'. * • ' • During the month of December, 2245 persons arrived at Port Chalmers, and 134 left. ' The Dunedin telegraph operators are still on strike. January 6. Anglin has been convicted of perjury, and sentenced to three years. The trial of Graves, an ex-clergyman, for forgery, is proceeding.' No bills were returned against the lads Thorns and Stafford; for arson at Ofcaria.' The Grand Jury were discharged. Between LI3OO and LI4OO was taken as gate- money, at the Caledonian gathering. The; Rev. Arthur Graves has been convicted of forgery, and sentenced to two years' impriS6tfmerit. The receipts for the quarter were L 48,153 4s, artd for the same quarter of the previous year L 56,347 2s 9d, the falling off being due, of course, to the commercial crisis of the past few months. , l l - January 6. The total rainfall in the wheat growing district of Chertsey, near Ashburton, was 2.16 inches. , Twelve reapers and binders passed through Ashburton yesterday to commence work, on Wednesday next, on the crops that -have'' been 1 'brought into a forward state by,,t}ie recent warm weather. At the Roman Catholic Church last night there was a large attendance to hear the Rev. Father O'Malley's lecture on the Catacombs. Just befere the commencement of the lecture two loud reports, in quick sftccession, sis of explosions, caused considerable consternation, in view of recent events. ° ills- was found, however, to be only boys playing with fireworks, and the audience soon forgot the circumstance in the interest exoited by an admirable lecture. The City Council, at last night's meetmeeting, determined to take steps to set at rest the question of how far they can be overridden by companies taking possession of streets for pipe laying and other purposes, and stopping all traffic. At a meeting of the Ministers' Association, held yesterday, the following resolution, moved by the Rev. J, Emslie, and seconded by the Rev. A. Reid, after being warmly supported :by eight other ministers, was unanimously carried, " That the Association, having heard of the likelihood of; the Rev. Mr. Chiniquy visiting this 'part of the Colony, and being of opinion thht his visit would, in many ways, be conducive to the furtherance of the interests of Bible truth, agree to very cordially bid him welcome." The sentences passed in the Supreme Court this morning wore : —John Anderson (for larceny at Christ's College), eighteen months, and James Wells (for assault with intent), eighteen months. During the past quarter there have boen ten alarms of fire, nine of which were serious, The additional convictions at the Supreme Court yesterday were : H. W. Ford (for thoft of a watch at Ashburton), eighteen months' hard labor; Patrick Moss (for stealing L 7), two years' hard labor; Mintiio Thompson (for larceny from tho person), four years' penal servitude. In ton years thero were twenty•fivi) convictions against this prisoner. Tho only prisoner acquitted was Richard 'Palmer, cmirged with larceny. ' .
