A sitting of the Licensing Court for the Maerewhenua district, was held at Duntroon yesterday, before T. W. Parker, Esq., U.M. (Chairman), and J. Ldall and J. l-iorton, J.P.'s, Commissioners. A transfer was granted of the license held by the trus* tees in the estate of Mr. C. A. Harris for the Terminus Hotel, Duntroon, to Mr. Leggitt. Mrs. Jessie Grant applied for a publican's license for a new hotel in the township of Ihtntroon. Mr. Creagh appeared for the applicant, and handed in a very numerously stencil petition in favor of the granting of ! the license. The application was opposed by | Messrs. A. A. Smith and Leggitt, of the Dun- | troon and Terminus Hotels, on the ground that I there was already sufficient hotel accommodation in the town. Mr. Creagh pointed out to the Bench that the only objections to the granting of the license came from interested persons, and that the signatures to the petition in favor of the application were sufficient to show that the inhabitants desired to have another licensed house in the town. The Bench granted the license on Mr. Creagh undertaking that the house should be completed in a fortnight; the certificate not to be isattcd until the Inspector of Police had reported that the house was thoroughly finished. This was the whole of the business. A very successful entertainment was given in the I'ltkeuri School last evening, in aid of the school. The room was comfortably tilted, and Mr. Wallace occupied the chair. The Chairman explained that the concert was held under the auspices of the Good Templars, and was for the benefit of the school. He mentioned the fact that the Wallace Lodge, which started with only 15 members, had gradually increased until there were now 39 members in good standing, and said this showed how rapid had been its progress.
