HIGH SCHOOL.

At the breaking up of this school there were present a large number of ladies and gentlemen, friends of the pupils, and the following members of* the School Committee Messrs. N. Fleming (Chairman), Montagu, and Smith. The junior classes sang some sweet songs, and were treated to sweetmeats by the Chairman. The senior classes then ranked in their lines in front of the school, the Cadets being conspicuous in their neat grey uniforms. A few songs were sung by these classes, the effect, of which was, to some extent, lost by- their- being sung in the open air. The Cadets were' paraded, drilled, and inspected by Captain Peattie, and acquitted themselves well. Mr. Fleming, ill an eloquent and appropriate speech, complimented the drill-instructor on the appearance of the Cadets, and called for three cheers and a hearty vote of thanks to him for his labors. In handing out the good attendance certificates, the Chairman took the opportunity of exhorting the children to punctuality. Mr. Smith complimented the teachers on the general appearance of the school, called for cheers for them, and wished the children happy holidays. The Rector then intimated that, having learned that the medals formerly given to the duxes of |he, school by Mr. James Holmes and Messrs. Fleming and Hedley would again be given, he had written to those gentlemen informing them of the winners for this session. He then called on the Chairman to present prizes given by Messrs. lion ay he and Cottrell, W, li. Hayes, and the teachers of the various classes in accordance with the subjoined lists. Mr. Flaming intimated that not only would the medal for this year be given yb his firm, but that' also for the past year. A large number of the parents and friends interested in education met by invii.itiop frpn} Mr. Lindsay at the NorJi S.phpol at 11 o'clock yesterday. The programme began with the infant department. and the children under Miss Kernahan sang and recited wiih great delight and precision. The movements of the infants displayed very careful training, and altogether this section of the North School gave very great satisfaction. The company then adjourned to Mr. Lindsay's department, where the children sang songs, duptsi, trios, and catches, and several of'the boys and girls recited. The workers in the school seem to be very enthusiastic, and the institution from beginning to end betokened the exercise of care and earnestness. The pinging- was capital, and some of the recitations and dialogues evidenced more than ordinary intelligence. The specimens of drawing exhibited by the pupils were really excellent ; in fact, opinions were freely expressed by those amongst the visitors who were qualified to judge that they would have been a credit to pupils of a far more advanced The writing specimens also are deserving of the highest commendation, and the blankness of the space on which they were exhibjted was tastefully rer lieved by lines of flowers dividing the different' samples. Some very beautiful specimens of sewing, &c., were exhibited, showing that the Scholars had profited by the careful instruction in this branch which they had received from the lady teacher. Mr. Fleming (the Chairman of the School Committee) : addressed . the children at considerable length, after which short addresses were delivered by Mr. W. J. Smith and the Rev. A. B. Todd. All the speakers complimented the teachers and congratulated the district on having such an efficient staff: A few prizes were distributed, arid lollies were given to the infants. Mr. Lindsay read an address to the scholars, referring to the year's work, The children were indebted to Mr, N. Fleming for the lollies, and Mr. Thomson also supplied a quantity of nuts. Mr. B. W.
