THIRD ASiSUAL SHOW. The third annttal exhiHticn in connection with the above Asiociatirm b*gan yesterday at Forbxtry Park, and will he continued and concluded to-day. We thick it may fairly be alaimed for ti that it is a success, at any rate as far as the show itself is concerted, which is all the Association are responsible for. They cancot control the attendance cf the public, without which success from the main point of view—the monetary —i» scarcely possible. In the matter of entries the Associatio is may be congratulated, for in all the principal c!as#ea there is this ytar a very appreciable improvtxnec t. It may fairly be prophesied that better things will follow j ear by year, especially now that the amalgamation with the Taieri Society has bsen aftrued upon. Tuere has always hitherto been a stumbling blucfc in the sis ape of a show at the Taieri, for which the Taieri farmers have considered-and perhaps rightiy enough considered —it their b«-anden daty to save tiuirstack for exhibition. As the Taieri ia beyond doubt the farming district upon which the Metropolitan Show mwt depend for it* entries, the result has fceen that the Dnnedin Show has not approached Is point ot numbers such a show as the Chnstchurch ene, or even Oamam. Besides the Taieri setting up a kind of opposition at Its very doers, Dunectin is handicapped .heavily by the proximity of the yearly inhibitions at Blaeskin and tlaewhere. Tho establishment of the Association on its present basis waa a work of great difficulty, and Its promoters deserve every prafai fcr the plnck and perseverance with which they stuck to their object. Tne amalgamation with the Taieri Society will tend to render their work in the future easier, and a prosperous career seems certain, we are glad to say, for the Associativa. While in point of rnambers, the Itaacdin show is admitttdly huhind its felkwa in the north, yet in point of quality It is just the opposite. The pick of all the Northern stcck comes here, and, as wb have previously shown, the Southern exhibitors are bound to send nothing bnt their best stock in order to compete wiih a chance of winning. Ia the principal claas-js judged yesterday, there has not been seen so good a competition at any cf the ether shows. In mer ncs the Hon 1; Campbell carried all before him in the North, bat here he had a worthy opponent in Messrs Murray. Roberts, and Co, who were, however, not fortunate enough on this occaaivn to beat him, as they dirt l»at jear. In shorthum cattle, again, the exhibition here yesterday waa of a character previously nnaurpassable in tho L'oteny, and the Committee have the consolation of knowing that it might even have been better for tome of the stock entered, asd concerning wbicb considerable interest meat have boes falti, were not shown, and their absence was altogether unavoidable. We refer to the shorthorn cattle fri ut Mr Samuel Gardiner's celebrated herd in Victoria, which werejex pnuted to compete in thia year's show. The Juavy weather whkh th«i Claud Hamilton encountered, and her cocsatjuent delay, have rendered this impossible, but we understand that as effort wilt be made to bring them from levercargill in time to be exhibited on the grounds this afternoon, and that t r . e stcck will be offered far sale by Messrs Wri&ht, Stephenson, and Co. on Saturday afternoon. To-day we are promised a grantl exhibition of horses, particularly draughts, the principal breeders ia OUgo being represented is the catalogue. The attendance<■ f pnb'fc rn 'fcr yesterday waa prclmblj tetween 400 and £>('o. There was a ci;&3td«rabr« fall of rain during the latter part of the after no. a, which militated to sume extent against the eo j«yjn«nt of those present. The arrangements were of much the same character as those ot previous years, and under the superintendence of the Association * experienced and, we are bound to add, most courteous and obligicg secretary (Mr Sjdney James), they were carried out in a highly satisfactcry manner. To-day, no doubt, the attendance will be numbered by thousands instead ef hundreds, for all the meat generally interesting of the exhibits »re to b« judged, ar.d, besides, th» Major bas requested the citizens to observe a half-holiday in honour of the cccasioir.
The claues judged yesterday were as follow :
SEEEEP. In the merino bleed the chief prize-taken ware :—lion. R. Campbell, Messrs Murray, Roberta, asd Co** A. .D. Johmtcn, G. I.* yiae, and Jobn Johnston ; bat no entries, as last >e»r, were pat in bj Messrs IX and (»• Proudfuut, wha have some very tine shtep; and the number ct pens occupied wm about a doztftt short of last year. In Leicester slidep there was a deei led improvement in the number of cor& petitory, and the Lincoln classes lett no room for complaint at any apathy on the part of those whese special attention ia devuted to the claims of tliia particular breed. The Komney classes were taken up by Mr John Keid, ol fcldertlie. There were aevurjtl pecs ef very weli-arown f.»t sheep which would have rejoicid the heart of a Smithtield dealer. A considerable amount oi point* had apparently been taken to bcicg the exhibits to that state of perfusion in which they were, shown, and attcr the somewhat open weathef of the_ last few months, the sheep were in a condition better fitted for exhibition purposes than at this tima last year, when many flocks suffered so keenly from the cigtars of the winter. The puns were well arranged for the convenience of visitors, but the same cannot be said of the distinctive number attached _ to each pun, as the numbers corresponding with those in the catalogue were nearly too small tc be read with the naked eje. This, though a seemingly small matter, is, however, of great importance when the members of the public shut up their catalogues in despair of identifying the exhibits. Coming to the merinos, the Hon B Campbell, who has enjoyed unlimited success in the show-yard, sent three rams, which occupied the first pens, and No. 1 exhibit was winner of the hrst prize as well as the silver medal, being the beat in the rams foor-tooth and upward*, bnaafss the best on the ground. The tor ee sfcowin jesterday were bred by Mr Comosings, VicSeria. The champion animal presented a large frame, well-pripor-tioneil, clothed densely over the back, along the sides and breech, with fine and long staple of tteecft. Two other ram» from the same gentleman « stud which competed, were nearly equal in merit, and attracted general noting. Messrs Hurray, Koberts, and Co. allowed three very good rams here, which had !h<* advantage of the Hon. K Campbells exhibits in tte amount of wool over the heady acdei nesth and down 6<j the heels. These were bred by Gibson and Son °f Tasmania. P«n 4 received second, and pen J third prize ; the third exhibitwas 'mall, though an even animal. Two exhibit* from Mr A D Johnston, though not p«ssengiog qoitu M tn« a staple of wool as the prize winners, wwe useful rams of *«* improving type, ilr Sise's two rams la this class were commendable exhib.ts, that in t-cn t{) having the on account oi size and tleece. Tbe latter gentleman sent ou exhibition as extra stock eight rams, which wexa apparently car ef ally selected, sad deserved ine highly-commended aud. The exhibit* of near, two-tooth or under, caused the judges some trouble in deciding tile awards. Ths Ben. H. Caropbel' had two, ud Murray, Kobert*, and Co. four P«ns. The sheep in this class were bred by J&a exhibitors, and, compared with those ffnporceii, proved the fact that quite as high * type of merino may be bred hers as those "Bperted. There were nine entries oi t"» o-tool h ewes, in which the Hon R Campbell gained first and second with his two entries. Murray, Roberts, and Co here ran tho pr.'zctaktra very c.oae. Mr John Johnston's exhibit in pen -IS was granted tLird pr rr, bearirjr, as it did, a remarkably lice tlescc. Thu other exhibitors hero were Messrs A D -Johnston and G L Site. In tho class for pees of ti > e tvrea with lambs, the prize tickets were more equally distributed. The Hon I' Campbell sent a pen of large ewes and well grown lambs at foot. Those in psn 52 were first. This gentleman, as the largest priz taker in mecitoa, will bo entitles to t»ku the silver cap, value LlO 10?, presented by the 2sYw Zealand Loan and .Mercantile Agency Company. Leicester sheep in letter condition than those at jeatcuUy's show it is seldom onr good fortune to inspect, and at eo previous exhibition of the Society has there bten a larger representation ot this breed. M i'ctnon Brothers, who hsd entered the lists here, obtained a d-.served second for pen ~7. The prize for three Leicester rams, twotooth or under, fell to the lot of Mr Jamej for three grandiy-lramed animals, witbalcngstapleof rich wool, tbis gentleman's second p«n receiving second award ; and the liew Zealand and Australian Land Co., with pea to k third Mr Jimes Allan iuu tuSerert lie lists here, but (he juJgea considered his pen tiutqual, though wellgrown sheep S.nc competed in class for Leicester evte, or over, with Ismb, and the two exhibits of the Jiew Zealand and ABstialioii Land Co. were worthy of the positions usigscd to them, pen So receiving tirat, and 84 second. The foinier ewe, besides being herself well furnished, was accompanied by one of the tineat lambs ui the jaid; the latter ewe had twin iambi. The two exhibits from the stad of MThersun .Brothers were a trifle deficient in siza when compared Kith the others of the class. Mr Jaoita ithasd put two forward, «,ne ol whica, in pen 56, wai well set up, witn capital head, and wool pleasant to handle. Air Jas Allan's triplet were commendable in each case, bat the judges selected pen 92 for special notice. The same exhibitors came into keen conttßt among the Leicester ewes, four-tooth or over, with eight entries. Again the Rew Zealand „ and Australian Land Company were the victors with a large-bodied sheep, carrying wool ot considerabld density on a carcass of rare symmetry. Mr James Allan's exhibits, a teauuiul pair of tliocp, were placed—pen 09, firat; *JS, second, air Jazuca Stand's and M'Pherson .Brothers' sheep were worthy nf notice Seven competed in class for ewes, two-tooth or under, when the New Zealand and Australian Land Company were successful in obtaining first and second awards with animals of a similar tjpa to those s&own throughout by tne Company, the breeding of which reflects infinite credit on the care, skill, and judgment of their manager, Mr Tho». firydone. Mr James Shand produced two splendid exhibits, for one of which, in pen 103, he took third prize. Mr James Allan's ahcep, in good show order, wire much landed. In class for three evi cs, ioui-tooth or over, the J> ew Zealand and Australian Land Co.'a pen (107) was second, being beaten by Mr James Allan's pen tll-1, which contained very fine lambs. Air Jamta Shands pen (110), third pnzc?, were capital sheep, Mr Ai'Pherson's _ were well up to the average. The jS'ew Zealand and Australian Land Co. received another first for five Leicester ewes, two-tooth or under ; Mr James Shand, second; and Mr James Allan, third. The JSew Zealand and Australian Land Co.'a trophies received the further addition of silver medaU for the beat ram of any age ((hat in pen bC) and for best ewe (that in pen 03), as well as Messis Haymanand Co.'s «.up, vauue L 5 at, for the largest pnzetaker m long-wool atieep, which the awards from UlO jjacolo and JL«eiceatcr classea secured to them.
Lincoln sheep seldom come on to the show-ground but the came ol Sutton figures iklsa somewhat prominently, and althoogh Uie buttons have earned a Colonial repute for their improved Lincoln*, there are not n anting men of enterprise who are prepared to enter the lists against them. Although .Mr F. button yesterday took the beet prizes, it was not without » closer run than usual with the New Zealand and Australian Laud Co. and Messrs Shand and Allan. Out of 10 rams four-tooth or over, Mr F Sut ton's two entries were awarded first and second, that in pan 124 receiving also the silver medaL Botn were large-framed sheep, well iurwahed, of s pure type, and clad with fine wool, bearing evidence of the sotnd constitution and prolific qualities of the exhibits. The New Zealand and Australian land Co., it will be seen by the prize liat, was third and highly commended; Mr J C Buckland, Waikonaiti, being commended for » large and apparently profitable exhibit in pen 121- Mr James iiband's and Mr James Allan's, while profusely covered, did not come up to the standard of the prizstakeis. Mr F button's two two-tooth rams in pens 130 and 131 were respectively placed first and second, the jSew Zealand and Australian Land Co. highly commended and commended. The three rams four-tooth or under were well represented by the New Zealand and Australian Land Co. and Mr Allan, who were pat first and second. Two of the animals in the pea of the former were very Urge. The tame exhibitors competed with escAabrace of entries in three rams twoutooth or twdsr, the Company poring victorious wiikflnt sod Mccoti pnm. For with
I lamb, two tcoth and four-tooth, Mr Allan took t*o 6ret and ono second prizes. Eleven entries;W«rc mido for Lincoln ewe, two-tooth or nnder, wben Mr Thomas Snlton came forward with t»o splendid sheep, taking lirst hotir.ara *nd third place, the New Zjaland and Australian Lind Co. second and 'commended, and Mr F Sutfr»n highly commended. The three p~ns of three ewes and l»ml>3 pi evented by Air Allan, apanst wbonith-. rc wa':not, however, snyconipotilion, were honoured with an award to each. Mr Thorras Sat ton was an ei'y winner of the I first prize for five ewes two.toothor under, the New Z.aland and Aus.rxlian Land Co. second, with a rather unequal pen, as the ewe intbu pen—ls7—bi cured the award of silver medal as the beet in the class.
d Romcey Marsh sheep were confioed tt two exhibits in the fiist class, viz., Messri i" John Reid, Elders.ie, and James Shand, r the former takiog the piizss, with Oliver e Twist first, Huxley eecond, and Feradaj t highly con*mended. As will be seen by our j. prize list Mr John Iteid's sheep weie ali przetakers, the ram in pen 163 rtceivicg j "h - silver medal award ; that for the best j ewe being given to pen 177. Fat atcep were well represented. Mr Jas M'Leiah showed two pecs of fa. meiiio » wethers, which were deserving of the , firac at;d tojond priz s, Henderson and . M'B-jatb, Christchurc'j, were fortunate in i taking the honours fur fat cros bred wethers against the New Zealand and Australian I Land Company, the letter scoring second [ and third. These geatlemen took first and i second in fat long-woolled wethers, and were I highly commended for limbs. The New ; Zealand and Australian Land Company were > first for long-woolled wethers under 18 months ; while Mr James Smitb, of Greeni field, gained first and second pnzes for i lambs, exhibiting, as ko did, some very ' lino choice animals, displaying care in breed* ing and feeding to the perfection they had , attained. CATTLE. The shorthorns were certainly the best represented class on the field, and wonld hare fcetn creditable to any pastoral show. Many of the animals were of remarkable Leauty and of great value, displaying all the points of good breeding. In point of numbers, the class was considerably better represented than it was last ye«r, *nd t ho general quality was improved. Mr James '-0n again carried off the champion priz9 with Stafford, a magnificent animal, bred by the Hon. M. Holmes in 1873. Stafford, as we had occasion to remark, when commenting on the exhibits in tee previous show, is remarkable for its enormeus size, its massive shoulders, and good quatters. The beast was ia splendid condition, and would take a good deal to lie*t at any time. The second prize in this class—buila of any age—was swarded for the Date of Ock, a very fine beass, which was imported from Berkshire, England, aboue foar years ago. It took the first pr ze as a one - yearold In the Royal Society's Show, England, and possesses many points of excellence. It has a very pretty head, is well formed, of good quality, handles well, and is of immense girth, but its quarters are not so good as thoso of the campion. An imported bull, exhibited by Mr David Corsan, took third prize. This an mal is of good style, with shoulders well developed and a finely-shaped h?ad, but is somewhat narrow in .ts hind quarters. Mr John l)cnoan's Waterhocse, a roan, calved in 1872, and bred by the Hon. M. Holmes, was shown, but was in law condition, or it would probably have been placed, as it showed good beef, and was a very even animal. Mr John Shennau's St. Andrew, bred by Mr Kemp3hell, was first in the three-year-olds, and called for commendation from all judges, Mr James Shand's ifiugenie, a good level animal, was a capital Becond. No others were shown in this clast, Mr Gardiner's stock not having arrived. It is worthy of notice that in this class there were three entries yesterday, and that at the previous show it wes not represented. There was remarkably good competition in class 3 shorthorn bulls calved bince August Ist, 1577. The priz j was finally given to Mr H. Cars well for hia exhibit-Master Riby, a roan calved in July, IS,& —an animal of very good pedigree and excellent points, beisg of good colour and quality, and well proportioned. The second prize fvli to Mr Kitching's 3rd Heir cf Roan Duchew, a very creditable importation from Australia, which was in the opinion of many an exceedingly close competitor for first honours. A very gocd beast belonging to Mr Menlove, which took first priz 3 as a yearling at the last Otago Show, and was first among the two-year-olds at the Oamaru Show, was placed third \ but in this class all the rntties v.tre s> cieditable thai to occtpy the third position ii-dijated very considerable merit. There is not much to be said concerning the yearling << except that they givo excellent promise, and judging from their pedigrees, it is more than probable thvt they will develop into animals of credit and value to the Colony. Mr James Gow's exhibit, by Stafford, dam Gipsy, took fiist place, Mr James Shand's Young Duke of Brunswick i?sb second, and Mr J Hurwood's Fosileer third. In this class two promising animals which had been bred by the New Zealand and Australian Land Company on the Clydevale Station wero shown, and a calf seven months old was shown by the New Zealand Agricultural Company. Too first two animals were well formed and well bred, but were out of condition, and the last mentioned cne was hardly old eoongh to be judged, with the others. In class 5, shorthorn cow or heiftr of any agy, there were nine entries, as against two entrie3 for the preceding year. The first prize was awarded to Mr Horwood's Duchess of Bridgewater, an animal cf splendid breeding and faultless symmetry. At the Christchutch Show this animal was only highly commendedj but she was then in poor condition, having been recently lauded from Victoria. Htr sire, the colebrated Duke of Brunswick, for which the sum of 150J guineas was refused, and her dam, Matilda s;h, it is said, cost 2000 guineas. At Christchurch the sum of 650 guineas was offered for the Duchets of BriJgewattr, and refused. Mr Kitching's Riby, bred by Mr G M Bell, waa commended at the Chrittchnrch Show, waa placed second, and Mr Kitching's Sweetbriar, an animal of remarkably good quality, third; while Mr James Shand's Wild Rote, tbe half sister to Horwood s Duchess of Bridgewater, was highly commended.
Mr Menleve was very fortunate in being the possessor of animals which called lor the approbation of the judges, for his two-year-old heifer, the Flower of Brunswick, was not oniy first in her claim, in which the competition was both numerous and numerous and creditable, but carried away the prize medal for the best shorthorn cow or heifer in the yard, thus gaining a preference over the Duchess of Bridgewater. A great deal of time was taken in deciding this matter of the championship, and every point was minutely noted. Outside the ring opinion was divided upon the merits of the first-prize animals, bnt upon the decision being given, its correctness was geneially admitted. This animal look first prize in her class at Cbrlatoharch and at Oamaru, and at 16 months weighed 11001b. It seems hardly too mnch to express the opinion that she is one of the very finest holers in the Southern hemisphere. Mr Menlove also obtained for his exhibit in the shorthorn heifers calved since August, 1876, Queen Mary, by Alphonso, out of Queen of the Lowlands, a first prize. This animal was first in Ohnstchurch as a three-year-old, and was also victorious in the pastoral competition at Oamaru and Timaru. Mr H. Carswell's Jessie was a good second, and Mr James Gow*s Mabel a close third, in the three-year-old class; while Mr Hitching earned efi the second and third prizes in the two-year-old class, and first prize in the yearlings with Eibytavin Duchess, a splendid animal, which secured a second prize at the recent Show at Christchurch. The competition was extremely close ia many of the classes of shorthorns, tbe exhibits being well worthy of the occasion, It is to be regretted, however, that none of Mr Gardiner's stock, which were entered for these classes, were on the ground owing to the detention of the Claud Hamilton, the stock which was expected to arrive from Victoria could not compete. This is much to be regretted, especially when it is remembered that the stock from Mr Gardiner's celebrated Branswick herd which was on the ground occupied such s distinguished position. As the stock ia to be offered for sale at an early date, it is the more to be regretted that the «r»im»l« were not in the competition. The Ayrshire* were fairly bnt by no means so fully represented as the shorthorns. As a wholr, hswever, they wsrs extremelv emUtobi* itmtof turnw*» •xosllw*
Mess .a A. and J. M'Farhne's exhibit took the first prizs for bulls of any age, and alto the chimpion medal. Mr Waddell's Southland Champion was second, and one of Mr Cook's imported bulls was third, while the other was not pl<ced. The victory of tho locilly-bred animals over the imported ones was remarkable, and speaks well for the character of the stock produced ia the Colony. It is only right, however, to mention that one of Mr Cook's animals was awarded the first prizs at the Christchurch Show, and that in '.be opinion of some it was worthy of a higher position than was: given it. A remarkably handsome two-year-old, Argyle, was shown by Mr James Don, and secured first prize in its class, aa it did last year at the Taieri Show, In this class an exhibit by Mr William Cowan, which was placed bsfore Argyle at the Oamaru Show, obtained second prize. Mr Oowan also took a second prize for a yearling bull; two first prizes for remarkably handsome cows, the one being in milk and the other in calf, and a firat prize for a two-year-old heifer. Mr Waddell exhibited a yearling bnll, which commenced its show career yesterday by taking a first prize in a class in which there were fivo other competitors of good quality and breeding. Mr Warnock- took the first and seooad prizes for yearling heifers, and Messrs A and J. M'Farlane and D. M'Kellar exhib.ted some very promising young stock. The Alderneys were better represented than last year. Mr W. J. M. Larnach's Alderney cow obtained the first prize, and Mr M'Neill's bull second. Both animals were of good colonr, possessed the true points of the breed, and were in good condition. Stme Hereford cattle were entered as extra stock, bnt were not judged.
The show of fat cattle was considered an improvement upon that of last year, whioh might have been expected cocsidering how great an improvement this season has been upon last. The present winter has been exceptionally mild, while the grasa has come away in an exceptional manner this spring Everything was, therefore, in favour of a grand Bhow of fat stock, and such an expectation was most certainly realised. The judges were Messrs Menlove, Scott, and Little, but in j ldging the class of fat cows Mr M-.nlove, who had an animal on show, gave place to Mr W. Hendeison, of Christchurch. The fittest bullock w>»s one shown by Messrs Hay Bros., of Akaroa, and was the same as took the prize at Christchurch. He is a strawberry, with immense depth of shoulder and rib, and breadth of back. His live weight in Christchurch was 27201b», which would probably give a dead weight of from 1700 to 1800 lbs. _ He is probably a larger > framed and bigger bullock than Messrs S G Smith and Co.'s prize exhibit of last year, bnt it iB questionable if his fat is so well put on. Messrs Hay Bros, also took second prize in the fat bullock class with a red bullock, a great deal smaller in size, but ia very fiae condition. Mr James Shand, of the Taieri, waa commended for a red-and-white bullock in txcnllent condition, bat he was wanting in size. Mr Shand also showed another pretty red bullock; while the N. Z. and A. L. Co.'B exhibit wa3 a very iarge-framed white bullock, whose eiz'. w.s apt to lead casual onlookers astray ss to his condition. In fat cowb Mr Garforth cama first, with a nuggety little strawberry, greatly hornmarked, but in prime condition all over, and snowing gocd quality also. The Company got second priza in this class, and the other exhibitors were Messrs John Muir, Shag Valley, and E, Menlove, Oamaru. Mr Garforth took first prize in fat cows nnder four years, and also in bullocks of the same age. His cow W6S a remarkably large strawberry, much bigger than his cow in the anyage class, but in less level condition. In three year-old steers the New Zealand and Australian Land Co. got first and second hpnours, but the award was not altogether coincided in by other judges. A black took the first prize, but the red one ad j jining was thought by some to be better, and to be worthy of first place, while the 6trawberry of Mr Garforfch's in the same class was considered equal to the winner. Messrs Henderson and M'Beath, of Christchurch, showed a very fine two-year-old steer, which was unopposed in his class. Mr Garforth was first with a white heifer in excellent condition amongst the three-year-olds, bnt in the two-year-old heifers the Company were unopposed. They had a pair of pure-bred polled Angus heifers, which called forth a deal of attention, and were worthy of it, for they were a pair of perfect bsanties. Most of the Company's exhibits were of the same breeding, bui, crossed to some extent, and the whole bf tihem were very wild, one heifer particularly working Lersalf into a perfect fury. Two calves were bhown, but neither were judged worthy of a prize.
AGKICCLTURAL IMPLEMENTS. Of agricultural implements, the number and quality of exhibits were quite up to the mark of last year. Messrs Reid and Gray, the local manufacturers, were to the fore as usual. In every single class in which they showed articles of their own manufacture, they outstripped all competitors, whether the exhibits of the latter were of what is generally reckoned the invincible American or the respectable and solid English make. In fact, their success throughout must have utterly dispirited other exhibitors, and if the Association want to get competition in future, the judges will have to receive a hint to be to the '* virtues very kind and to the faults a little blind" of imported goods. However, even unsuccessful exhibitors could scarcely find room for complaint at the awards of the judges yesterday. They could only grumble at Messrs Reid and Gray for putting such a polish on their goods—surely a legitimate thing to do for such an occasion. It might be suggested that in one or two instances the judges hardly sufficiently took the element of price into consideration, For instance, in the grubber, T Robinson and Co. showed an article for Ll3 against one by Reid and Gray for LlB, and considering that the price had to be taken in connection with the utility of the article, the former might well have put the other out of court. In heavy and light harrows, Reid and Gray exhibited four-leaf implements against their opponents' three-leaf, in which cases the extra price was allowable, and indeed the articles were superior in every way. In clod-crußhers Reid and Gray Bhowed the same article which was so highly commended last year. It is a highly useful article, and the judges awarded it along with the prizs a special commendation as being a first-class inatrnment. Then they showed Also a broadcist sowing-machine for grain and grass, with extra fittings for turnips, having a width of 18ft. They had one of these also at Ohristchurch, jwhere it got first prize. A couple of Yankee grain-drills were shown by the New Zealand Hardware Company and T Robinson and Co. There was a good competition in farm drays, .but Reid and Gray could not be beaten even by the contesting local builders. Glaister and Cunningham got seoond prize with a light, strong dray—plain, but serviceable. There were five horse-rakes shown, Henderson -Law and Co coming first. All were imported articles. Only one wool-press was entered, and it was thought by -the judges to be worthy only of commendatioD, without a prize, although at Chrifltchurch and elsewhere the same article has repeatedly taken first prize against others- It was shown by T. Robinson and Co. In reapers, Reid and Gray took first and second, a Bamlett's and a Wood's coming in for no mention. In a twodrill turnip-sower T. Robinson and Co. beat Reid and Gray, but the latter had not an article of their own manufacture. Messrs Brodrick and Carter exhibited an eight-horse power traction convertible plough-engine by the well-known John Fowler, of Leeds, which was highly commended by the judges. Four steam threshers were Bhown—three of them at work. The first prize went to one by* Marshall and Sons, exhibited by their agents here, H Law and Co. It was complete in every particular. The engine was fitted with Head and Sohiemoth's patent straw-burner, while the thresher bad a self - feeder and stacker, with a patent elevator on a carriage of its own, with winding gear to raise it into position. The National Mortgagee and Agency Company showed a Robey's nine hone-power engine, and a'machine with patent] angle frames, the whole being well finished and in grand working order. It was ; awarded seoond prize. Messrs Reid and Gray I showed a Clayton and Shuttleworth's, which was given third prize. This thresher lm taken a large number of prizes at' the Royal Society's Shows in EnglancL It was not worked on the .ground yesterday. Besides the articles shown for prizes, there were a large number pf .exhibits, which came in for a good share of attentipn. A. and T, hadr oo« o(. t their ; p»%nt trtUtotrolMtep pa
was shown in practice during tho day, a p»ir of innocent " bunnies " being operated upon with startling effect. The method of the machine is t> convey toe fum:s of tome chemically-prepsrad dust, roasted over a charcoal furnace, into the burT9WS of the rabbits, all of which, wthiu scent, are straightway rendered siark and stiff; Amongst Reid and Gray's ex'ra exhibits was a new make of narrows, which were greatly admired. Their special feature is that the bar is not drdled for tho teeth, bnt the latter aro fixed to it by a kiad of ; clamp, and held in position by a wedge. In way the whole implement ia strerigShoned, and as it iB c' eiper in prbe than the old style, it should become a favourite. The following is a total list of the extra exhibits : —Reid and Gray—Two reapers; doub.'efurrow plongh, shares; net medium harrows, sat chain harrows ; small thresher, for horse-power, with wianowing-michice ; cheese-press, imported ; corn-crusher, own make; two-horse power broadcast turnipsower, 18 feet; three-leaf roller, fis d grubber, drill grubbrr ; Norwegian harrow, own make ; and dray. THIRD ANNUAL SHOW—SECOND DAY, The second day of an Agricultural and Pastoral Show being the one on which the stock and other exhibits are in reality exhibited to the public, it cannot but be regarded as exceedingly unfortunate that the weather yesterday was so inclement. It ia not of very much consequence when the opening day is showery, because as a rule only those attend the show on the first day who are closely interested in it, and are not likely to be cUunted by the weather; but on the second day fine weather is of muoh greater consequence, and the well-nigh constant rainfall yesteaday had the effect; of depriving the Society of a large amount of javenue, and a larg& number of paopl6 'from '' witnessing an exhibition of 'a moat interestiqg and intrinsically''valuable character. Spme consolation : however* be clrawn u ; J frbm the fact that, deapita : the unfavourable to, more than; 2000 n< attended tfae "'ahftw, and we' may -'- venture the opinion thkt ' ( giletted jvpuld have obeeif'had the 'weathflr been' ''' at all favourable it is saddening to ' .think of," aa it was estimated that at |esst a loss of L3OO to the Society was occasioned by the Continuance of the '' rain. The arrangements for the show were of the same satisfactory oharaoter as previously, all classes were judged with reasonable expedition, and the awards were posted ln : a conspicuous manner, so that visitor! were soon aware of the result of the oom* petitions. The City Guards Band was present, and during the afternoon played in the excellent manner for which it is beooming remarkable. It certainly required good exhibits, lively sports, and entertaining musio to prevent the grounds from being entirely deserted, but as these were not wanting, nearly everybody stayed until a late hour and enjoyed themselves, although the weather and the muddy state of the ground were sufficient to irritate the most patient and enthusiastic admirer of agricultural and pastoral exhibits. Amongst the amusements provided for the public by private enterprise was one of such an unusual and creditable character as to be worthy of speoial mention. It was a camera obscura, by means of which an accurate representation of all the varied sights and scenes of the show-groand was shown to onlookers at a reasonable charge. It will be open during the races, and 1b well deserving of patron- , age. We omitted, in noticing the extra exhibits previously, to refer to a collection of the well-known Wanzer sewing-machines shown by Mr Sidford. These machine* are too' well known to require comment. We wish also to correct an error in the fint daji's prize-list as published by us. Mr P > 0 Neill, instead of MrLarnaoh, should have beda credited with obtaining the first prize In the Alderney bull class. Ono of the hones in refusing got fcul of th« wing Lurdle and came to grief, bnt no harm or hurt was door. Clever jomp* were l-utily applauded bv the crowd, and the wbo e afijir was a pfeaaurable interlude in the day's proceed* ings.
