ORIGINAL CORRESPONDENCE.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE OAMARU MAIL.

Sib,—lf any respectable citizen, manly enough to give his name, will show that any real obstruction is caused by the Saturday night preaching in Thamesstreet, another situation shall be chosen. Your correspondent "X.Y.Z.," by the tencr of his letter, proclaims what manner of man he is.—l am, &c., F. J. Jeffreys. TO THE EDITOR OF TH& OAMARU MAIL. Sib,—l was very much taken aback last night on taking up your valuable paper to find that in Oamaru there is amongst others one who cannot give up a little of our wide street 011 a Saturday evening to a few of our noblest and best citizens to proclaim God's word to those to whom it is so hard to send it. No rightful-minded citizen, I am sure, will grudge these good people the pleasure that they find in speaking to the " waifs and strays," for it is these to whom they endeavor to send a word in season ; and I for one, Sir, will commend rather than discourage such noble actions, and hope that " X. Y. Z." may some Sunday (for I should judge from his letter that he can only bear to be preached to on that day) hear a word that will bring home to him the commands of the Master whom these certain unco guid sects" strive to serve. From the tenor of "X. Y, Z'a," letter, I glean sufficient of the character of the man to assure me that ho is quite an exception to the. majority of our citizens,

and I am sure that he would stand alono were he to attempt legislation in the direction he indicates. I am not aware (being almost a stranger to Oamaru) of the magnitude or otherwise of these gatherings, but if they are what "X. Y. Z" says " monstrous street religious demonstrations" depend upon it Mr. Editor, the promoters will not bo at all disheartened by his remarks.—l am &c., W. H. '
