GOVERNMENT OR MISGOVERNMENT.

(TO THE EDITOR OF THE OAMARU MAIL.) Sib.,—lmpelled by the adverse decrees of. fate, Mr. Macandrew has withdrawn his motion of " no confidence," and for the" present the Hall - Ministry are triumphant. That' hideous spectre of "no confidence," which, like the sword of Damoclesj hiing suspended over them since their accession to office, has vanished into air. Simultaneously with the disappearance of this ghost, the cloven hoof appeared beneath the ennobling mantle of authority, until at length, growing bolder by impunity, the. mask has bean altogether .thrown aside, and the prorhiaes' of liberal measures that they then proposed passing, are now thoroughly understood and estimated at their true value.

Time when non sibi sed patricaymsthe recognised motto of legislators, but this axiom is totally reversed by the Chameleon-coated and sapient senators of our country, who, in this more ptosaic age, have not such .a high-souled sense of honor as to be above benefiting them-

selves at tlie expense of their country. I have searched through their Parliamentary records, and I have failed to discover one single liberal measure they have passed conducive to the good of the people since they have swayed the rod of power. Can you expect figs from thistles ? Assuredly not. Truly, the high-handedactionsofi those who" but yesterday emerged from a chrysalis state of being to; fullfledged Ministers, -by a species of hypocrisy and degradation, present an incomprehensible anomaly unparalleled in the history of any country: It is a sight to "make, the -iangels- weep-' 1 . But the darkest hour is before the daw,p. Let them run their erratic 'aqd; unenviable career. The liberty of the people will not always be' trampled under foot. 'Meanwhile, let us,.patiently wail and watch, and seize tjie golden opportunity to hurl them from the pedestal on which they are tKo hour that shall consign them to everlasting oblivion and wellmerited contempt.—lam, sc.,, *" 7'A.
