While George Day and four sons were, bringing down a cartload of firewood from Kauri Point to Auckland, a squall struck the boat, and the father and one son were drowned. The Thames monthly gold return is | SSlOoz.; Coromandel, SSOoz. The Alburnia- gold mines returns arc improving ; shares arc up to 255, with a firm market. The Auckland Volunteers left early this morning for the Thames, and were warmly welcomed by the Thames Volunteers on i arrival. f CHRISTCHURCH. November 8. A shark Gft. 6in. in length was caught thi3 morning by a fisherman a short dis- | tance from the Lyttelton Breakwater. [Another, much longer, was hooked, but l it carried away a large fishing-line and hooks. A number of gilt sixpences, excellent imitations of half-sovereigns, are in circulation in Christchurch. Only on close examination can tho word sixpence be seen. Free passes to various parts of the district were being issued this morning by the Public- Works Department to the unemployed, No reply has yet been received as to the opening of the other sections of railway work, but it is expected that a section will be opened next week at Sheffield, which will give employment to a good number. Mr. Blair, Engineer-in-Ohief, proceeded to Wellington yesterday, relative to this and other matters. The second body of the two fishermen drowned in Lake E'Hesmere on 4th September was found yesterday on the lake shore, nearly eaten by gulls. An open verdict was returned. In reply to a letter of enquiry from the Select Committee now sitting in Wellington on the question of the revision of the t.irifl, the Christchurch Association for Fostering and Encouraging Native Industrios forwarded yesterday a number of reports from sub-committees on the various industries in existence in Canterbury, and recommendations as to the establishment of others. WELLINGTON. November 9. A man named Horace Ford, a wellknown hotel-keeper of Napier, died suddenly at the Commercial Hotel yesterday. An inquest is. not likely to be necessary, INYERCARGILL. November 9. The Mataura arson case was called on at the Police Court on Saturday morning, and further adjourned for eight days, on the application of tho police. Inspector Fox, in applying for the remand, remarked that the case was only in its infancy.
