It would appear that Mr. James was a much heavier loser by the fire yesterday morning than was at first believed. Though the greater portion of his stock was got out, it was damaged to such an extent either by removal or by water that it has been rendered comparatively valueless. This applies more particularly to the manufactured articles and a number of jars of paint, which were almost completely destroyed. Mr. li. L. Rule, the lion. Secretary of the North Otago Kille Association, has handed ns the following letter for publication : " Duncdin, 4th November. —Sir,—As it has been found impossible to fire the return match with the North Otago Ilific Association on the 10th, and with a view to having an annual match, my Council has directed me to enquire whether you could send a team to Dnnedin on thcoccasion of the Otago Rifle Association's prize meeting in JJeccmber, and make a triangular meeting with the Canterbury men, who will be down here at that time. Several of your team will doubtless be in I'uiiedin on that date, and the others could surely spare a day for the match. Please reply as soon as convenient. —Yours. Arc., M. C. Ciikaoh, lion. Secretary 0.R.V." A meeting of the Council of the Association will be held early next week to consider the matter, but from what wc can gather there seems every prospect of the suggestion being adopted. If so the contest will be rendered doubly attractive from the fact that tiie North Otago marksmen will have an op|>ortuuity of trying conclusions with the picked men of Canterbury, in addition to liring -g.'iinst the best team of the Otago Association. The second annual meeting of the Oamaru Young Men's Christian Association was held in their Rooms, Waitaki Buildings, last evening. the President (Mr. J. H. Milbgau) occupying the chair, and a majority of the members and associates resident in the town lwing present. The annual report and bal-ancc'-slicet were presented to the meeting, which showed an increase on the membership lining the vear, and an extension of their operations. Thereafter the meeting proceeded to elect nix members of Board of Management for ensuing >oar, resulting in the following bointr elected :—Messrs. YV. H. Cottrell, .1. H. Milligan, Miranis, Barley, Bieknell, and John Falconer, whose duty it will be to add three others to their number and elect their own oliice-bcarcrs for the year. Notice having been given of the service of song to be rendered by the Associa- [ tlo.i's choir to-morrow night, and that the i annual conversazione of the members, asso- [ eiates. and their friends would be held on j I'ridav. the '2lst inst, alter the customary I vote "of thanks, the proeeedidings tcr- ( initiated.

At the 11.M. Court to-day, bef.-re T. VT. Parker, Ksr|., R.M.. .Tames Kelly, against whom :i'.l previous cnuvi'-tions wore n cor led, charged with having l.'oen drunk and dis- ; orderly in Thames-street yesterday morning, was remanded until to-morrow. Richard ' M'C.artiiy was charged with having no lawful visible means ot support, and was rc- ■ mauded until Monday to allow of a medical > examination as to the state of his mind. Robert Moore was charged with having de- • j-rrted his wife ami four children, and was j until to-morrow*. | A Xirapaiv. correspondent writes us as j ['•! i )W.i7 —i :i> :he coluaius of | vi.iir pr.pj r ji'/:ide;ice from j Xg.tt>ar.» with : ■ i *.<•' corresjiondeiit I of tf:e . 1 wi!i try and irive j your readers ah:!• < .\;.i ••>!» 01 allairs, , which are principally ihe 01 the public grievance between e.jn-.spoiid-nt of tile I)tngo Witness ami "Slaiidcr Ueluted." In :nv opinion both the correspondent : oi" the Otago Witness and "Slander Refuted" were in error iu being rather too : hasty in rushing into print and attacking each other in the manner they did without I'n-st giving the matter due consideration. 1 iiave not the slightest doubt that had they done so there would not have hern fio much public writing between these gentlemen, 'flic explanation I will give is that each of these gentlemen tryii.t; to out-rival the other in this ali-impon.ii.t township of Ngapara. so that th-ir :h:.:i>-s will be given as the leading public m'-n of Ngapara when the history of X.-w Ze:ii..::d will' be written in 1!>>0. Tlit-. and t iii?; only, can be the eaiite of this f>ct:y strife : but I think there would hu.u mor« honor in store for them had t!; v y not tltuir feelings to master them. There was a dance'given at X-.-npara 011 Friday, 31st October, in aid of the public baths, admission 0110 shilling. The correspondent of the Otago Witness wns there, and also " Slruider Refuted," and cadi .of them s- meii to enjoy themselves. I in;sr liiat both have made friend 3, that ihis spirit may continue, and that they will emulate e.aeh other for the benefit of themselves, the township of Ngapara, and surrounding district, iu a proper and peaceful manner. The crops in this district are looking excellent, and it is to be hoped that they will continue so, and that ii'e will have an abundant harvest. Oreat dissatisfaction is expressed in this district at the rout? the Windsor and Livingstone railway is taking, 05 most of the farmers say it would open up more country bv way "of the Kakanui route ; and I am oi the same opinion, as the distances to cart grain /rom The Tables to Ngapara and Duntroon are not great, and it is quite right that the line should have been made where it would benefit the district and country at huge. The "Own Correspondent' - ' of the Otago Daily Times at Wellington writes as follows to that taper : —"lt would obviously bo hpproper "for the precise intentions of the (lovernment regarding the tariff to be disclosed, as it would simply put fortunes in the hands of speculators. The rcimposition of the sugar, tea, flour, and timber duties, however, is taken for granted on all sides ; also a material increase of stamp duties, and a substantial property tax. It is rumoured that the land tax will hj" abolished, as the projtosed proporty and income tax covers all. The Maori Representation Bill will probably be dropped quietly, as iiiere is oiieh a wido divergence- of opinion 011 the subject. The question of redistribution of representation is now under careful consideration. The result is uncertain, but probably a Bill will be introduced which the House will be quite unable to agree about, n3 -in the case of Maori representation, leaving the postponement of tiie question until another session." From an advertisement in another column it will be seen that the members of the Otepopo Rifle Corps liave decided to hold a rifle competition on Monday next (Prince of Wales' Birthday). In order that riflemen of all companies in the district may have a pleasant day's shooting, the competitions will be opeu to members of all the companies and of the North Otago Association. Several money prizes will be awarded, and liberal handicaps framed, so that all the shooting men in the district, whether good or bad shots, should take a trip out to Otepopo. Full information can be obtained frpm Mr. D. S. Rhodes.
