Ellen Jane Power, a child aged eighteen months, was accidentally drowned in a stream at Stokes' Valley on Monday. The boisterous weather prevents the steamer working at the Cook Struts Cable. The case of liichardson v. the Bank of New South Wales is being heard at the Supreme Court. The plaintiff seeks damages from the bank on account of it having stopped his credit after it had advanced half the amount promised to him upon a letter of credit, and on the strength of which he had entered into arrangements for starting in business, and made himself liable for a considerable sum of money. Two Election Petition Committees met this morning. The proceedings were merely formal, and they adjourned until to-morrow. Considerable disappointment is felt by Auckland Roman Catholics at the nonarrival of Archbishop Stein by the mail steamer. Mr. James Mack.iv, Native Commissioner, in an address to the Volunteers at Paerora, expressed a hope of settling the difficulty without recourse to arins. A Liberal Association is to be formed at Ohinemuri. The Orange Lodges celebrated the purchase and transfer of the Protestant Hall at Newton by a soiree.
INVERCARGILL. October 21. A sale of Government land took place yesterday, Mr. Osborne acting as auctioneer. As much as LlO per acre was realised for some deferred payment suburban sections. WESTPORT. October 22. The case of perjury against Eugene Joseph O'Connor occupied the Keefton Court for three days. The accused was committed for trial.
