MUNICIPAL COUNCIL.
The usual fortnightly meeting of the Council was held last evening, when there were present—his Worship the Mayor, Councillors Roberts, Humphrey, Mainland, Smith, Garland, and Octerson. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. Mr. Gordon applied for permission to lay down a drain in Reid-street, oil section 0, block 47. —The matter was referred to the Inspector of Nuisances for report. Mr. David Grant applied for permission to put a horse in the slaughter-house yard in Humber-street. —Permission was granted, provided jipplicanfc paid os per week for the privilege, one week's notice to terminate the agreement. The Clerk to the Waitaki Road Board wrote urging the Council to erect abridge over the water race on section 13, block 2, Aivamoko.—Tt was resolved that the matter be referred to the Waterworks Committee, with power to act. Messrs. Bright Bros, wrote asking payment of their account of L 57 Ss.—The letter was referred to the Finance Committee. The Inspector of Nuisances reported on the state of Wear-street, and offered certain suggestions.—Referred to the Public Works Committee for report. The Auditors wrote as follows :—■ Gentlemen.—We beg to draw your attcnto Mr. M'Luod's petty cash book, which shows an expenditure of LI US) 2s Id during the half-year ending 30th September, but only two sums of LU os and LI 5s lOd have been authorised by the Finance Committee. Receipts have been produced for the items marked in blue pencil, with the exception of four specially marked in the margin. We have, fcc., •I. Church ) . T T - Auditors. J. Locke ) The letter was referred to the Finance Committee for report. After a little discussion, it was resolved that the Council could not entertain Mr. George Matthews' claim of Li, tho Engineer reporting that lie did not think the claim a correct one. Mr. Otterson brought under the notice of the Council that the pump in High Ward was out of order, and thought that the Engineer should look to it, as it was a great boon to people living in that portion of the town.—The matter was referred to. the Public Works Committee, with power to act. Tenders for insuring tho plant of the Waterworks were opened, and that of the North British Insurance Company was accepted. Several accounts wero passed for payment, and the Council adjourned.
