The Secretary of State for the Colonies writes rc the Otago University Council's application for a charter, and the counter petition from the governors of the Canterbury College, as follows : —" Having regard to the objections pointed out in Lord Kimbcrley's despatch of January ;;i, 1873, to more than one university in the Colony, and not being able to find anything in the present circumstances which would justify me in departing front the decision then arrived at, or in recommending the establishment of more than one chartered university in any Australasian Colon}', 1 have not thought it my •duly to advise Her Majesty to authorise anv steps towards granting letters patent to the Utngo Lnivursity." WAIMATE. October 9. There wore seventeen candidates for the position of Councillors. The fnllowing nine were elecied ; —Hayes, Sherwin, Gascoyne, Middleton, Evans, Black, Goldsmith, Cameron, and Price. CHKISTCHUItCIT. October 9. At an inquest on Mr. S. G. Baldwin, who was found dying in a paddock at the He.-.thcote Valley, a verdict w:i3 given thai deceased died of congestion of the brought on by intemperate habits and exposure. D.ceased was an allowance man, sent out from England. He had spent his allowance, and mortgaged what was to come..
