Tiie attendance was very good, bur not so larsre as on former occasions. Tiie bookmaking fraternity was fairly represented, but there was notmuch speculation on the different events. The special train from Oamaru brought up a large number of persons eager to view the first race meeting of the season in the district. A great many residents up country arrived by various means, and the little township is alive with people. The grand stand and saddling paddock are well patronised, amongst the occupants of the former being a large sprinkling of ladies. Mr. Johnston, of the Commercial Hotel, has all the booths, and is doing a very good business. The course is in capital order, though, if anything, rather fast. Before starting a slight shower of rain fell, but not much. The following are the results : MAIJVEX rr.ATE. Fennella (M. Allen) ... ... 1 Black Prince (Osborne) ... ... 2 Magician (J. Allen) ... ... 3 The six went away to a good start, and ran in a cluster for some distance. Fennella then took the lead, with Little John second, and Black Prince, who got away last, toiling away in the rear. Passing the stand, Fennella, who was being hard held, had a slight lead, Little* John second, going very well, and f -oyalty third. At the end of a mile Black Prince began to go up, and to ok second place, but could not catch Fennella, who won easily by several lengths : Magician a fair third. COrXTV I'LATR —11 MILE. Ti\ this order they passed the grand stand the first time, York next, hard held. Playboy still in the rear. At tho end of the mile Blue Peter vvas still leading, but York then began to go up to the front, followed by Rangitira, and when half a mile from home Blue Peter fell back into third place, York having taken the lead, and looking like winning. Nearing the straight, Rangitira came up to York, and the pair raced together-, but though the whip was applied to York he was beaten with ease, Rangitira winning by a half length, without being pushed.
