CRICKET.

The opening match of the season was played by the Excelsior Club on !:* iturday afternoon on the old ground. 'Lhe sides were chosen by the captain (Mr. G. Fenwick) and the deputy-captain (Mr. Cooke), and the match resulted in a victory for the latter. The batting, as might be expected at the opening of the season, and on such rough ground, was not brilliant, though Little and Walls managed to get into double figures. The bowling, on the contrary, was remarkably good, particularly that of Cooke, who took 8 wickets for 13 runs. The following are the scores :
