Oil the subject of protection the Auckland Star says:—"The importation of cheap American buggies ha? proved so detrimental to the business of the local manufacturers that they have been obliged to discharge from their employ many skilled artisans who are thus denied tire means of subsistence. The matter is now being agitated in the community, r.nd we understand there is a probability of a mass meeting being held shortly for the purpose of adopting a petition to the Government, urging them to so amend the tariff as to put the local manufacturers on equal terms with their American competitors." The Taranaki Herald in an article 011 railway construction says : —" The railway in this district is a very striking instance of a line being formed that, at the time it was constructed, even the most sanguine never cxpcctcd to do more than pay working expenses ; yet the result has proved most satisfactory, for 't '»as been the means of opening up a valuable country, which would otherwise have been occupied, 110 doubt, to the present day. The Waitara, New Plymouth, r.nd Inelewood line leaves a profit of over 10 per cent.—the percentage of expenditure to the receipts being on the last yeai s earning. If, then, this lino pays as it does, with merely the local traffic, may reasonably expect to find when it reaches Hawera that by tapping a wealthy and populous district such as Patca, it will prove to be one of the best paying lines in the Colony. It should be the policy of a Public Works Committee, if be wishes to make profitable railways, to make them through unsettled districts, for by doing so he would be making the Crown lands more valuable, and at the same time opening up aud populating the country. The result of the railway returns amply justifies Parliament in raising additional loans for the purine of completing the works already begun, and it is only to be regretted that, whilst moncv is so plentiful in the amount was not double that which was asked for.
