MUNICIPAL COUNCIL.

The usual fortnightly meeting of the Council \v;is held last evening, when there were present—Councillors Humphrey (in the chair), Roberts, Garlaud, Otterson, Smith, Headland, Townsend, and Mainland. The minutes of last meeting 'were read and confirmed. A letter was read from Inspector Thompson, to the effect that women of low character wore allowed to assemble in some of the boarding houses in town, a,nd pointed out that this was contrary to Section 7 of the for common lodging-houses. He requested authority under seal for ihe police to take ihs necessary steps to abate the nuisance. —lt was resolved that the Inspector's request be acceded to. The Secretary to the Treasury wrote, intimating that the sum of L 8 -2s had been placed to the Council's credit on account of license fees and by-law penalties. A letter was read from G. It was resolved that permission be granted, provided that., applicant pay three months' rent in advance. The Clerk reported that he had asked the Mayor to send a telegram to the Colonial Treasurer asking for the subsidy on last year's rates.
