WAITAKI COUNTY COUNCIL.

The usual monthly meeting of the Council was held to-day, when thero were present—Messrs. Murcott (in the chair), D. Sutherland, Johnston, Thomson, Todd, Falconer, and Duncan. Mr. Oliver (Engineer) and Mr. Barron (Inspector) were in attendance.

The minutes of the previous meeting were reaii and confirmed, and the outward correspondence was read and approved. A letter from the Treasury was read, stating that LG 2s 4d gold revenue, and duty L 6, under +.he Licensing Act, had been paid' into the County account at tho Bank. The Under-Secretary (Mr. G. S. Cooper) wrote acknowledging the receipt of certain information relating to the income and expenditure of the County for the last financial year. Several letters from the Railway Department were read, with reference to the opening of the railway fence at Maheno to enable a new road to bo made up the Kakamri Valley. Some discussion took place, during which it was stated that tho contractor had proceeded with the work, notwithstanding that notice had been given him not to do so. On the motion of Mr. Duncan, by Mr. Sutherland, it was resolvig^j 1 That the Clerk write to Mr. Lowe on the subject, pointing out the facilities that would be given by the road to tho public to get to the goods shed, and that tl. V traffic oil the Tine would not be so grea> as at present. A letter was read from the Survey Department, desiring the Council to take steps to protect the survey pegs in the county by inserting a clause in any contracts they let prohibiting the removal of Government survey marks. It was decided to acknowledge the receipt of the letter. Mr. Edward Flicker wrote requesting the Council to place a culvert at the end. of the right-of-way leading to the Papakaio Pre-emptive. Mr. Johnston mentioned that the Council had cut across a private culvert belonging to Mr. Fricker, in order to drain the County road. It was decided that the Inspector should attend to the matter. Mr. P. M'Donald wrote giving notico that he had fenced in a part of his land, which included a portion of-tho present road leading to Kurow. Mr. Burnett, Assistant Engineer for Railways, wrote stating that the necessary repairs to the approach road at Waianakarua were being proceeded with. Mr. Todd reported that a meeting of ratepayers had been hold at Cave Valley, when the closing of the old road-line between sections 28 and 33, block 3, Oamaru Survey District, was agreed to, and the new line accepted. 1 The Clerk was instructed to notify that the old road was closed. The following letter was read : 1 Dimedin, September 8. Sir, —I got another L3OO from the Waimate County Council on account of Upper ' Waitaki Bridge, and I shall feel obliged if you will get a similar amount passed by your Council on Wednesday. The Commissioners have the contractors' progress payments to ' meet, and must be provided with suilieienfc funds to carry on with until Government contribution is received. The following is a copy of a telegram received on the Kith of last month :—"Minister has directed LSOOO to be put on next estimates on account of Upper Waitaki Bridge. There is no vote out of which it can be paid at once.—(Signed) J. Ivnowj.es, Under Sec. Public Works." —Yours, &c., John M'Gregok. County Clerk, Oamaru. After some discussion, it was resolved, on the motion of Mr. D. Sutherland, ' " That, seeing that Mr. M'Gregor has not ' given this Council tho information wanted re the Upper Waitaki bridge, this Council vote no more money until such information be given."
