MUNICIPAL COUNCIL.

The adjourned meeting of the Council was held last evening, when there were present—His Worship the Mayor, Councillors Garland, Headland, Humphrey. Mainland, Otterson, Roberts, and Townsend. . The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed, and the outward correspondence was read and approved. An application from Mr. Baudinet for permission to remove a few loads of gravel out of the cutting near Mr. Brownlie's residence was referred to the Public Works Committee. A petition from a number of residents in Ouse-street, with reference to the lagooia in that part of the town, was referred to the Public Works Committee.

Messrs. J. and T. Meek wrote complaining of the bad state of tlio approach to their mills in Severn-street. This was also referred to the Public Works Committee. The following letter was read : Sir, —In your letter of the 2Gth, asking mo to explain liow my claim increased from L(> to L:; 0, I may state that the first claim I made was not for damage done, but wages for digging two wells. If the boxing had been put in, I should not have required to trouble you further. I wish the Council to understand that, through the carrying of the water off its old course, I will not lie able to get my wheat in this season. I wish you would let me know how much land is taken up by the race, as I am paying for the same. LIOJ would not pay the damages done by breaking down fences and destroying my farm, and lam paying rent for it all. You will see by this that I do not want to make an income out of the Corporation.—l am, &c., John Frew. The letter was referred to the Waterworks Committee for a report. Permission was granted to Mr. G. W, Draper 1 - form a right-of-way, crossing, and drain to his premises in Coquet-street, the work to be carried out under the supervision of the Engineer. The following transfers of leases were agreed to :—Section 14, block 78, from Mr. E. Clarkin to Mr. W. C. Webb and Street, of Dunedin, of LSO, as brokerage on tlio negotiating of a loan of LSOOO for the Corporation, which the Council did not take up, having in the interim obtained an advance from the Government. Some discussion took place upon the matter, some Councillors pointing out that the sum promised to be secured on short dated debentures had not been forthcoming. Councillor Headland maintained that, as the negotiations had been kept open at the Council's request until a reply could be obtained from the Government, the claim was perfectly just. Eventually, the matter was left to the Mayor and the Chairman of the Finance Committee to arrange with Mr. Sumpter. Mr. Bathgate, as agent for the Public Trustee, wrote asking the Council to refund the amount deducted from the money due to the late James Duffield for funeral expenses, and stating that the Council had acted irregularly, as tho whole amount should have been paid over and a voucher sent in for funeral expenses in the usual course.—The matter was referred to the Waterworks Committeo with power to act. It was decided to invite applications from persons willing to act as valuator. Accounts for Waterworks, amounting to LS34 2s lid, were passed for payment, when the Council are in funds.
